Our Bright Network Events are a great way to connect with potential employers as Sara recently found out. After attending our First Year Lawyers Top 100 event she secured a vacation scheme at Slaughter and May. Read about Sara's experience below.

Why did you choose Slaughter and May?

There are many reasons why I chose this firm, but the primary one is that they have a truly unique strategy and culture. As far as the role, I chose it because I’ve been interested in pursuing a career as a solicitor at a City law firm, and I wanted to make an informed decision by getting a taste of a career like that.

What was the toughest part of the application process? And your favourite part?

The toughest part was writing my CV; in particular, ensuring that it was short and concise, yet conveyed all the necessary information. My favourite part was the interview.

Was there anything about the process that surprised you?

Being very nervous before the interview, I was surprised by how enjoyable it was. They do put you on the spot and ask you difficult questions, but it was still a very pleasant and interesting conversation.

What three top tips would you give your fellow Bright Network members?

Firstly, research: research many firms thoroughly and make an application shortlist of the ones that truly appeal to you. That way tailoring your application becomes easy, because you are genuinely interested.

Secondly, commercial awareness: read “Know the City” and “Commercial Awareness” by Christopher Stoakes. That will deepen your understanding of the articles you read in the FT or The Economist and help you with interview case studies.

Thirdly, be yourself: don’t try to give them answers that you think they want to hear.

What's your lucky charm or pre-interview ritual?

It’s quite cliché, but I always listen to some motivational music on my way to the interview.
