Lily's insight into securing an actuarial internship with EY

Created on 3 Mar 2022

We recently caught up with Lily about how they secured a role with EY, showing passion for EY during the interview and their top tips for Bright Network members looking to follow in their footsteps.

When did you first hear about EY?

I first heard about EY at the Finance and Professional Services Bright Network Internship Experience UK in 2020. Associates at EY delivered exciting talks about the potential career options within the sector including audit, consulting, and actuarial work. I distinctly remember EY standing out at this event as all the speakers came across as extremely passionate about their roles, very friendly and willing to help!

How did you show you had a passion for EY when you were interviewing and in your applications?

After hearing about EY, I attended as many events that the company were hosting as possible to get a feel for its purpose and culture. Doing so, I was able to show that my values aligned with EY’s and that I was a perfect fit for the company. Also, it enabled me to discuss the exciting new projects that I had heard about and wanted to get involved with.

What stood out to you about EY?

I think what stood out most was everyone’s willingness to step down and help, no matter their level. I found the possibility of learning from some of the top people within their fields extremely exciting! EY’s drive for innovation also stood out to me. Working with emerging technologies and constantly pursuing new opportunities; EY is always striving to maximise its value to its customers.

How did you build your commercial awareness before the interview?

I regularly reviewed the top news stories within the financial sector on Google. I then spoke to my friends, family members and LinkedIn connections to try to understand how these updates would impact my chosen sector and company.

What are your top tips for tackling tough interview questions?

  1. If you are unsure how to answer a question, ask the interviewer for a moment to think. Collect your thoughts and try to form a logical structure to your answer.
  2. If you are unable to answer a question after taking a moment, I would recommend talking through your thought process. You may say something that helps the interviewer guide you.
