Mariah's success story: Securing a graduate role at Diageo

Created on 16 Jul 2025

Mariah is an English Literature graduate from Durham University. She secured a People & Culture Coordinator role at Diageo in Dublin, through Bright Network.

First, please tell us a little bit about yourself.

“My purpose is to shape communities where language breathes, hearts lead, and creativity and connection flourish. my passion and dedication to shaping spaces where people can thrive and flourish was my motivation for going into HR.”

What motivated you to apply for the role?

“I love the brands, and Diageo's purpose of celebrating life every day, everywhere. The more research I did into Diageo it was very clear to me that its values and commitment to inclusion and diversity would make me feel very proud to work for Diageo.

It also seemed to be a great graduate programme that prioritises the growth and development of the graduates going through it, which as someone without an education in HR and business was imperative to me.”

What was the application journey like?

“I prepared by doing lots of research into the company's values and purpose. I then thought about my skills and experience within this lens.

The process consisted of psychometric tests, video interviews and an Assessment Centre. The process gave me the chance to showcase my skills and give the assessors a real insight into my character and what I can bring to Diageo while also showcasing the company's purpose and values.

Every step in the application process made me more determined to secure the graduate scheme.”

What are you most proud of about your journey?

“As a first-generation university graduate without immediate family that has worked in the corporate world, diving into this world has had its ups and downs, especially with moments of imposter syndrome.

While my journey in overcoming imposter syndrome is ongoing, I am proud of myself for being authentic, open and bringing my unique perspective and skill sets to this exciting, dynamic company.

Moving to a new country was another big step, which was challenging but incredibly rewarding. I am proud of myself for being bold and brave to make the step and throw myself into new opportunities for growth and development.”

What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

“In my initial coaching call for Diageo, I was given the advice to be yourself and let your character and personal purpose shine throughout. I would give the same advice to anyone looking to follow in my footsteps.

When you’re applying for graduate roles, you can get into the habit of saying what you think the interviewer is expecting you to say. Not only are you being interviewed, but you’re also interviewing your potential employer to see if the role and the culture of the company suits your character and purpose.

By being myself throughout the application process, it was clear to me that Diageo suited my purpose and values.”

What have you learnt from going through the process?

“Before starting out I wish I had put less pressure on myself, as the more pressure I put on myself, the more nervous I felt.

When I allowed myself to enjoy the process, I felt able to showcase myself more authentically. While still nervous, which is normal, I was able to show my character.”

Tell us about the future. What’s next?

“I’m going onto my second rotation in September, moving back home to London and joining a global team. I’m really excited to gain experience in a different area of the business, while deepening my confidence and love for HR.”
