Nia's success story: Securing an Internship with Visa
Nia studies Philosophy at University of Bristol. She secured a Summer Internship in Visa's Consulting & Analytics department in London, through Bright Network.
First, please tell us a little bit about yourself.
"I have been set on consulting as a career path since mid first year. I was eager to learn about roles in professional services that I would be best suited to coming from a humanities background and wanting to work in a people facing role.
I enjoyed the idea of being able to work on a broad range of projects and meeting different clients."
What motivated you to apply for your role?
"I was attracted to the role when interviewing a consultant at VCA as part of my role on the Bright Network Student Leadership Board. Following this, I was able to talk to their team who all seemed so enthusiastic.
The idea of working for a payment company to help make business decisions that could have impacts globally, was something that excited me. When visiting the Visa office, it was definitely somewhere I could imagine myself working."
How did Bright Network help you secure your role?
"I found it difficult coming from a humanities background wanting to enter consulting. Going to Bright Network's WiTEC helped me speak to employers and hear about roles that I would have never been exposed to otherwise. It was there that I learned about the VCA department at Visa.
From this I attended a Case Cracking competition at Visa, where I was fast-tracked to the interview process. I would have never known about VCA had I not spoken with them at a Bright Network event!"
What have you learned from going through the process?
"The turnaround time was much faster than any other role I have applied for. I went to the Case Cracking event on October 20th, had my interview on November 6th and got my offer on November 21st.
I learned the importance of keeping up-to-date in the relevant sector, even if it's just watching youtube videos on a certain topic."
Tell us about the future. What's next?
"I'm looking forward to starting my internship in the summer! I'm also hopeful that following my performance I will be given a return offer for the graduate programme. I'm hoping to learn more about the payment industry and what it looks like to work hands-on in consulting."
