Olivia's success story: Securing a graduate role at Saffery

Created on 13 Jun 2025

Olivia is a Financial Economics graduate from the University of St Andrews. She secured a Tax Assistant role at Saffery LLP in Inverness.

First, please tell us a little bit about yourself.

“My career path reflects who I am because it combines my love for problem-solving with my need for structure and purpose. I am also quite driven and detail-orientated so working in an environment where accuracy is key and where my work can contribute to bigger decisions really motivates me.

It was also very important for me to go into a career where there is learning and progression opportunities. Growing up what I wanted to be changed so frequently, at one point I wanted to be a vet, the next week I wanted to work in forensics. It wasn't until my later secondary school years that I decided I wanted a career in numbers, which was the driving force behind the degree and ultimately the career path I chose.”

What motivated you to apply for your role?

“I was initially drawn to Saffery after hearing positive experiences from people already working in the office, which gave me a strong first impression of the culture.

When I attended the face-to-face interview, I immediately felt a genuine sense of warmth and connection with the team. That positive atmosphere and the instinctive feeing that I'd fit in well really stood out to me. In the end, it was the gut feeling and welcoming environment that made Saffery the clear choice for me.”

What was the application process like?

“I was initially surprised by the number and scope of stages involved in the application process.

I completed numerical and situational tests, as well as a preview meeting via Teams and then a face-to-face interview which also included a case study element. However, Saffery's prompt communication throughout made the entire process feel much smoother and more streamlined.”

What are you most proud of about your journey?

“One of the things I’m most proud of is how I managed the transition from university into a full-time role. At first, imposter syndrome set in, and I questioned whether I was ready.

However, I started to celebrate the small wins; meeting tight deadlines, receiving positive feedback and soon the doubts quietened. Alongside this I also had to adapt to the pace and expectations of a real work environment, something I had never experienced before.

This was a real transition period but each day I felt things were slowly coming together and while I still have so much growth and learning ahead, I'm proud of the steps I've taken and the confidence I've built within my role.”

What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

“I’m very grateful for the opportunities that have come my way, and I honestly wouldn't do anything differently. I'd tell anyone looking to follow in my footsteps to just trust the process because everything will click and you are exactly where you're meant to be.

It’s easier said than done, especially during the application process, but it is so worth it. The best piece of advice I’ve received is: ask questions and learn as much as you can.”

What have you learnt from going through the process?

“The process was definitely a little longer than I expected in terms of the number of stages, however Saffery's communication throughout was excellent.

Before starting, I would have liked to know more about the time and level of involvement required during the application process, as I think it’s a bit more involved than people might expect.”

Tell us about the future. What’s next?

“I've already begun working towards my tax qualifications and plan to complete both the ATT and CTA over the next couple years.

Looking ahead, I hope to continue progressing within my role and within my team, and in time, work towards a managerial position.

Most of all, I'm looking forward to the sense of accomplishment that will come with finishing my exams and being able to fully enjoy my role without the added pressure of studying. However, even though the exams will be over in a couple years, the tax environment is always evolving, and I don't think the learning will every stop!”
