Seyi is a Law graduate from the University of Warwick. She secured a Trainee Solicitor role at Ashurst in London through Bright Network.
First, please tell us a bit about yourself.
“My career path reflects my interests in writing and research, while reflecting my ability to think critically.
Growing up I always wanted to be a lawyer, so I am glad I had the opportunity to make this a reality! I decided to go to university because I always enjoyed learning and school so it seemed like a natural next step.”
What motivated you to apply for the role?
“I really enjoyed my Law degree so I was encouraged to apply for some Training Contracts.
I went to a few Ashurst events during my time at university and the firm seemed very progressive and inclusive.
This, in conjunction with my interview experience (where I felt really supported and comfortable), is why I chose Ashurst out of the other firms I was applying to.”
What was the application process like?
“Ashurst's application process was really smooth and quite intuitive. The HR interview is a competency interview and it was quite straightforward.
A surprise was how customised my partner interview was. I had been a freelance writer previously and they tailored my entire commercial scenario around this experience. This really set the firm apart from others I was interviewing with.”
How did Bright Network help you secure your role?
“Bright Network had an Ashurst employer page and the testimonials from the firm's then-trainees helped me better understand the firm's culture and key areas of interest.”
Did you ever attend any Bright Network events?
“Bright Network’s society of the year competition which The Black Women’s Project at Warwick won! I also went to a tech event to get better insight into the industry.”
What was your application journey like?
"My application journey was really smooth. I chose to focus on a handful of applications at firms that I really liked and progress those as far as possible.
I prepared for the various stages using websites like Bright Network to find out first-hand about experiences from trainees and to conduct research about the firm.
I was most nervous about the partner interview but that ended up being my favourite part! The most helpful feedback I got was about the writing test - read the whole article first before you start writing.”
What are you most proud of about your journey?
“I am really proud of how much I have grown both personally and professionally. I have accomplished so many things at Ashurst that I wouldn't have thought possible before I started!”
What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
“Ensure that you carefully review the training contract structure at your firm, particularly the compulsory seats.
I had a few pre-existing areas of interest and I have been able to explore all of them. So make sure the firm you accept a training contract that actually caters to your areas of interest!”
What have you learned from going through the process?
“I wish I had known to be more relaxed and less nervous so I could better showcase my personality at every stage – everything all works out in the end!”
Tell us about the future! What’s next?
“I’m in my fourth seat now so almost fully qualified. I am very much looking forward to this next step in my career! I am looking forward to progressing, growing and becoming more specialised in my chosen area.”
