Sophie’s success story: Securing a Franchise Marketing internship at NBC Universal

Created on 21 Jun 2024

Sophie is a Media and Creative Industries from the University of Warwick. She has secured a Franchise Marketing internship at NBCUniversal through Bright Network.

First, we’d love for you to tell us a little bit about yourself.

“I discovered my obsession for media when I did Media Studies in A-Level. When I found the newly launched course at the University of Warwick in Media and Creative Industries, I fell completely in love with the combination of theory, practice and industry.

It was the compulsory modules where we had to do placements within the creative industries that led to me uncovering my passion for marketing. I did a few marketing internships and then became a marketing officer for Warwick Student Cinema.

I’ve always had a love for film and television so when I saw that NBCUniversal was hiring for marketing interns, I knew I had to apply!”

What motivated you to apply for your role?

“One of the reasons I applied for the NBCUniversal internship was because Universal is an internally recognised, iconic name within the film industry.”

“I grew up watching Universal films and I’ve been to the Florida theme parks, so I couldn’t imagine anywhere else as exciting and impressive as Universal to work for.”

“When I saw the job listing on Bright Network, I saw it as my dream internship!”

What are you most proud of about your journey?

“I’m most proud that I managed to do three summer internships during my degree, all in creative industries.

People told me that it was very challenging to get a foot in the creative industries, which motivated me to prove them wrong!”

What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

“The more research you do the better prepared you’ll be and it’s also really important to show your passion in your answers.”

“I took advantage of doing mock interviews with a careers advisor at my university, which helped my interview technique.”

“Finally, have lots of questions ready to ask, as it shows your curiosity for the role!”

Tell us about the future. What’s next?

“I’m most excited about working for such a huge name within film and entertainment industries, as well the diversity that will come with working on different franchises!”

“It feels like the perfect culmination of my creative industries work experience and degree, fulfilling my longstanding dream of working in the entertainment industry.”

“I can’t wait to be marketing consumer products for iconic franchises like Jurassic World, Trolls and Minions and I’m also looking forward to learning from more senior people in the business, who I’m sure will have lots of knowledge and useful advice.”
