Sophie's success story: Securing a graduate role at British Airways

Created on 27 Oct 2025

Sophie is a Biomedical Engineering graduate from Queen Mary University of London who went on to complete a MRes in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at University College London. She secured a role as a Graduate in Engineering, Planning and Supply Chain at British Airways, through Bright Network.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.

“My academic journey has always been centred around systems thinking, data analysis and solving real-world problems, which are skills that naturally led me to explore roles in logistics, planning and operations.

While my background is in healthcare engineering, I’ve always been drawn to how large systems work together, and aviation seemed like the perfect next step to apply those skills at scale.”

What is your role and what element are you most looking forward to?

"I’ve joined British Airways as a Graduate in Engineering Planning and Supply Chain. I am looking forward to gaining exposure to the full lifecycle of aircraft maintenance and seeing how strategic planning decisions directly impact flight operations.

I’m excited to rotate through the different departments, work alongside experienced engineers and contribute to real improvements in efficiency and safety.”

What stood out to you about British Airways?

“What really stood out was how British Airways combines its legacy and global presence with an ongoing commitment to sustainability and innovation. The BA Better World campaign demonstrated how the company is thinking long-term, not just about the business but about the environment and future generations.

I was also drawn to the open and supportive culture I saw throughout the recruitment process.”

What does working for British Airways mean to you personally and professionally?

“Professionally, it’s an opportunity to grow within a world-class airline and contribute to the complex processes that keep aircraft in the sky.

Personally, it is rewarding to be part of something so impactful and dynamic. The scale of the operation is huge, but there is also a real sense of community and collaboration.”

How does this role fit into your longer-term career ambitions?

"This role is a perfect fit for my goal of working in strategic operations and engineering management.

I’m aiming to build a career where I can improve planning processes, optimise supply chains and ultimately support efficient, sustainable operations in the aviation industry.

The rotational structure and hands-on experience in this programme will give me a strong foundation to do that.”

What was the application process like to join British Airways?

"The process was structured, fair and engaging. There was an online assessment followed by a video interview and an in-person assessment centre, which consisted of an independent exercise followed by an interview with members of the team.

Throughout, the early careers team were communicative and encouraging. The assessment centre was a really positive experience, and it felt more like a conversation than a test, with the team making a clear effort to help us feel comfortable and confident.”

How did Bright Network help you secure your role?

“Bright Network played a key role in helping me discover and prepare for the opportunity. I used the site to explore roles I might not have come across otherwise, including this one.

The application tracking and preparation tips were particularly helpful when juggling multiple deadlines during my master’s degree.”

What would you say to someone who’s unsure about applying?

"Just apply! You have nothing to lose and a lot to gain. Even if you are not from a traditional aviation background, your skills might be exactly what the team is looking for.

British Airways is open to diverse experiences and looks for curiosity, motivation and problem-solving ability, so don’t count yourself out before you’ve even applied.”

Finally, what tips would you give to Bright Network members looking to follow in your footsteps?

“My advice would be to apply early and stay consistent. Get ahead of deadlines so you’re not rushed and can put forward your best application. It’s good to have a spreadsheet with all your applications and key dates.

Secondly, show clearly why you’re interested in the specific role and how your background adds value. Make sure your cover letter is tailored to the job description.

Most importantly, be yourself at the assessment centre. Show your genuine personality, including how you think and what motivates you. Being authentic helps you stand out and allows the assessors to see how you would fit into the team and the company culture.”
