Graduate insight into securing a vacation scheme with Slaughter and May

Created on 19 Feb 2018

In a few months time, after her successful application, Zita will spend her summer at top law firm Slaughter and May.

Why did you choose this firm and this role?

I attended the Bright Network Future Top 100 Lawyers event in September 2017 where I met David Johnson who inspired me to apply to Slaughter and May. Slaughter and May stood out to me for their prestige reputation, its multi-specialism and its collegiate approach. Therefore, I applied to the Slaughter and May vacation scheme.

What was the toughest part of the application process? And your favourite part?

The toughest part of the application process for me was writing the CV. I found it difficult to know where to start but once I had a good structure it was easier to finish.

My favourite part of the application process was the interview, in particular discussing the article that I had been given to read prior to the interview. It was enjoyable engaging with the arguments in the article and having my views on the matter challenged.

What three top tips would you give your fellow Bright Network members?

1. Be confident.

2. Know your CV and cover letter well.

3. Practise answering interview questions using the STAR technique.

What was the toughest question you faced at interview?

The toughest interview question I had was what differences had I seen in practice between American firms and British firms.
