WTW: Human Capital & Benefits segment

By WTW
Book open Reading time: 3 mins

WTW's Human Capital & Benefits segment can be broken down into two streams:

1. Retirement stream

WTW is the leading provider of retirement consulting and actuarial services, providing actuarial services to more of the world’s top 300 pension funds than any other company.

Their Retirement team works with trustees and sponsors of occupational pension schemes, combining expertise in retirement consulting, broking and individual financial advice to support organisations in designing, managing, administering and communicating all types of retirement plans. The Retirement stream is WTW’s largest intake across all business areas for grads and interns.

Requirements

  • Good numerical and communication skills
  • Ability to plan work effectively
  • Desire to solve challenging problems
  • Will develop consulting skills
  • Minimum 2.1 degree in a numerate discipline OR 2.1 degree including A Level Maths grade A/B or equivalent

Here’s some advice from Jasmin Bedi, a senior member of the Retirement team, and what WTW look for in this role:

‘An actuarial role calls for essential numerical and analytical skills. However, in order to progress in a role as a consultant, communication becomes a close second. Actuarial work involves statistical modelling and analysis, with results being communicated to clients having little or no actuarial background. Hence making it crucial to develop an understanding of the models along with ability to translate its results to a non-technical audience.’

2. Talent & Reward stream

Talent and Reward is one line of business but is split into 2 areas:

Rewards consulting

This stream provides the strategy, design and execution support essential for paying people appropriately and enabling organisations to attract, retain, motivate, and engage employees efficiently and cost-effectively. Some of the responsibilities here include:

  • Preparing briefing documents on executive pay
  • Conducting major reviews of pay designs
  • Designing and implementing a career framework. This involves developing job families and role profiles and conducting job levelling, an analytical process that determines the relative value of jobs in an organisation.

Talent consulting

Talent consultants work as part of a team and serve as a key resource for the consultant in charge of each of your engagements by performing client work. They work alongside some of the industry’s top consultants on client projects. Some of the responsibilities include:

  • Analysing data, drawing conclusions and presenting results
  • Identifying the capabilities required by leaders in a professional services firm to enable them to meet their new strategy and business goals
  • Developing pension engagement strategies
  • Planning and developing change management, communication and training requirements in support of employees

Within the Talent stream, graduates can work in the following practices: Communication & Change Management and Talent Management & Organisational Alignment. Talent consultants use a combination of consulting approaches and technology solutions to help clients with the design, implementation and communication of effective and enriching Talent strategies.

Requirements

  • No need for a particular qualification, but WTW supports employees through qualifications such as CFA, the ICSA Share Plans, ACA and World at Work
  • Teamwork
  • Attention to detail
