A quick glance at life in Commercial Law

Book open Reading time: 2 mins

Future lawyers. You are analytically minded, commercially focused, detail orientated and you communicate well. Your academics are strong and you're genuinely interested in the legal sector. Your career choice is a natural one. But how much do you really know about what it’s like to work in commercial law? Here's a little bit of insight for you...

1. The work

Before you qualify as an Associate, you will spend two years completing a training contract. That time will be divided into a number (usually 4 or 6) ‘seats’ whereby you will work within a different legal department - such as corporate, pensions, IP or litigation, under a different partner. This rotational process is designed to maximuse your exposure to as many areas of law as possible to give you enough insight to make an informed decision about where you will ultimately specialise.

Lawyers at City law firms usually work in teams of 2-10 people on client projects. The tasks involved in each project are usually allocated depending on experience level, and trainees and junior associates will be supervised by more senior lawyers.

Regardless of experience level, all laywers' time is divided betweeen collaborative meetings or discussions and individual document reading, reviewing and writing. As a trainee, you will start working on small supporting documents and you will be expected to keep on top of multiple documents at any one time.

Why you should consider a career in Law

2. The Hours

We'd love to reassure you that you'll be working a 9-6, but the truth is that working on business deals can be urgent and unpredictable. Right from day one, you will have quiet periods followed by incredibly busy periods. You will quickly learn to ride the waves! Read: Key skills and qualities you need for commercial law.

3. The Environment

Generally speaking, lawyers work in offices for two to four people. These offices are usually grouped around an open plan area where a group secretary will work. Whilst the building won't be open-plan, many firms have an 'open door policy', to maintain a collegaite atmosphere and discourage silo working. The building will also contain a variety of meeting rooms which are reserved for client meetings, functions and document signings. Many city law firms also have a canteen providing food around the clock.

4. The Salary

Salaries vary from firm to firm, but as a trainee you can expect a starting salary of around £39,000 (London) or £27,000 (regional) and as an associate you can expect around £65,000 (London) or £45,000 (regional).
