Application Advice – Harriet at Bristows

The application process consists of three stages:

• Written exercise, video interview and written test.
• First-stage interview with a Senior Associate and Partner
• Second-stage interview with two Partners

• Do your research. Take the time to understand the sectors the firm operates in, the types of clients it works with and its culture.
• Demonstrate your research. Avoid sending generic applications to multiple firms. Tailor each application to highlight why you are a strong fit for that particular firm and what specifically attracts you to it.
• Be authentic. We want to get to know you as a person, not just as a future lawyer. Include your hobbies, interests and work experience outside of law to show what you would bring to the firm as a well-rounded individual.

• Re-read your application form. Make sure you are familiar with everything you have written, as your interviewers are likely to draw on your application when asking questions. It can also help you prepare examples and answers about your experiences.
• Be punctual and prepared. If your interview is online, test the platform beforehand so you are comfortable using it. If it is in person, plan your journey carefully and allow plenty of time to arrive.
• Keep researching the firm. Stay up to date with recent cases, developments involving the firm and wider trends affecting the legal sector. Showing that you are genuinely engaged with what is happening in the industry can make a real difference.

• Practise structuring open-ended answers. Techniques such as SWOT or PESTLE can help you organise your thoughts and provide a clear, logical response. Practise speaking through your ideas so that you become comfortable with your own style.
• Focus on commercial awareness. Keep up with current affairs, particularly stories and developments relevant to the legal sector and the areas in which our clients operate.
• Come prepared with questions. This is your final opportunity to assess whether the firm is the right fit for you, so make the most of it. Ask thoughtful questions that will help you understand the firm, its people and what life is really like as a trainee.

My biggest piece of advice is to make research a priority throughout the entire process. Research is not just about impressing your interviewers; it is also about making sure you understand what you are looking for in your future career and why Bristows is the right firm for you.

Just as importantly, be authentic. Think about what would make you a great colleague, beyond simply being a brilliant potential lawyer.
