Meet Heidi
We caught up with Heidi Barber, one of our Spring Vacation Scheme participants, who shares an insight into her experience of the programme. Heidi has just started the SQE after having completed her law degree at University of Liverpool.

How did you find the application process?
The application process for the Vacation Scheme proved very straightforward and efficient. I felt I could highlight and demonstrate all facets of my application, from academics to personal interests – all of which were important to convey. I really enjoyed the opportunity to be invited for the Assessment Day, which further enhanced the application process and confirmed to me that Latham was where I wanted to undertake my training contract.
How did you prepare for your Vacation Scheme?
To prepare for the Vacation Scheme, I kept up to date with current affairs and interesting news stories impacting the legal sector and the economy more widely. I also ensured I had a good grasp of the deals Latham had recently worked to ensure I had an understanding of the type of work I would be exposed to on the Vacation Scheme and as a trainee solicitor in the future.
What attracted you to Latham & Watkins?
My initial attraction to Latham was underpinned by the breadth of practice areas, international reach, and client base. Once on the Vacation Scheme, that appeal continued to grow and I was attracted to the culture of collaboration and entrepreneurialism that Latham fosters. As a prospective trainee, I was attracted to the breadth of practice areas available to train in, as well as the firm’s innovation and investment in the use of AI to further its service to clients.
What was a typical day like during the Vacation Scheme?
The Vacation Scheme was curated to get the most out of the experience through a range of sector-specific talks and workshops. Each day we would hear from different trainees, associates, and partners at the firm, alongside drafting a practice-specific research task for assessment. During the two weeks, we also had amazing opportunities outside of the normal day to socialise with one another through dinners, activities, and even the West End!
How would you describe the culture at Latham & Watkins?
Latham is incredibly entrepreneurial, collaborative, and ambitious. During the Vacation Scheme, everyone I met from the firm was approachable and friendly, and more than willing to ask any questions and give advice. I really valued the opportunities to go for coffee or have lunch to learn more about life at Latham.
What advice would you give anyone looking to do the Latham & Watkins Vacation Scheme?
Ensure you demonstrate yourself as a person, and your individual attributes and characteristics which would make you a great candidate. Additionally, as Latham is a very entrepreneurial firm, demonstrating work experience in any capacity will highlight your transferable skills alongside important soft skills, which are just as important.
