We caught up with Victor, a Computer Science graduate from Warwick University, who secured a role as a Product Support Engineer at Graphcore. He tells us about why he applied to the graduate position and gives exclusive insights into what life at the company is really like.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?

I’m Victor, I’m originally from Romania but came to the UK about 5 years ago to study Computer Science at Warwick University. Throughout my degree, I was exposed to many different aspects of technology and discovered that I was most passionate about pursuing a career in machine learning.

What stood out to you about Graphcore when applying for opportunities?

I came across Graphcore whilst applying for jobs in my Masters year. I was particularly interested in the company as they created a completely new processor, their Intelligence Processing Unit (IPU), which was purpose-made for AI and has limitless potential for every field of machine learning. I knew that, securing a role at Graphcore, I would be hands-on with cutting-edge technology and could help to transform industries, from healthcare to automotive. The prospect of being able to make an impact across this diversity of industries and the variety of experiences I’d gain from this was really exciting to me.

How did you find the application process for Graphcore?

Luckily, I completed my application before the pandemic so was fortunate enough to get some in-person interaction throughout the process.

It began with submitting an online application form, before being asked to complete a pre-recorded interview. Following this, I was tasked with a 2-hour coding interview which I really enjoyed as it gave me insight into the types of things I could get involved in if I joined Graphcore.

Throughout the process, I was provided with updates and was kept informed as to what I could expect when I officially joined after graduation. The team was so friendly in all aspects of the application journey, and I remember really enjoying meeting different teams from across the business before starting as I got an authentic view of the company’s supportive culture.

What was a ‘normal day’ like in your role?

Working as a Product Support Engineer, my days are very varied. Each morning the team has a triage meeting in which we go through the tickets that came in for the day, split these between us all and look at how we can support each other. I enjoy that my role allows me to collaborate with different teams as well as allowing me to interact with customers and understand how I can help meet their needs. I’ve been involved in cool projects such as the creation of tutorials to help our customers navigate the process and interface.

How would you describe the culture at Graphcore?

The culture is one of support and respect where people are keen to help others. I’ve always had such positive and helpful interactions with my team and the extended team, giving me access to the advice and knowledge I need to progress.

Another great aspect of the culture at Graphcore is that they’re heavily invested in ensuring everyone’s opinions are valued - you don’t have to fight for your ideas to be considered or your voice to be heard.

What piece of advice would you give to someone who is thinking of applying to Graphcore?

It’s important to have a true interest in machine learning. What Graphcore values, above your experience and knowledge, is your willingness to learn. When you join, you’re not expected to know everything, and it will be a steep learning curve but having the drive to develop and grow is an invaluable asset and something that Graphcore looks for.

Joining the team, you’ll have the freedom to constantly develop through initiatives such as a half-day of learning a week. I’ve used this opportunity to brush up on some specific technical skills which I need to excel in my role.

Graphcore is always looking for the next generation of innovators to support them in leading the artificial intelligence revolution – could you be what they’re looking for? Find out more here.
