Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?
I recently completed my MSc in Law and Finance at LSE, and did an LLB at UCL before that. During my undergraduate studies, I did internships across investment banking and finance which solidified my interest in commercial transactions and venture-backed businesses, which ultimately steered me toward corporate law.
I grew up in Canada, and played competitive sports for most of my life. I missed the lifestyle so I decided to take on marathon running this year.
What inspired you to apply for the trainee solicitor programme at Goodwin?
Goodwin stood out for its clear industry focus and market position at the intersection of capital and innovation. Given my interest in technology, life sciences and growth equity, I wanted to train at a firm with a strong foothold in the US. I also attended panels led by the Private Equity and Technology & Life Science practices which made it clear that I wanted to progress to the point of becoming a sector-specialist throughout my career. Beyond the calibre of the work, every interaction I’ve had with the team demonstrated an ambitious yet down-to-earth culture.
What has been the single most important thing you learnt so far in your journey in law?
Throughout my time at Goodwin, I realised that technical expertise is essential, but law fundamentally remains a relationship business. I believe that long-term success in the industry relies on how motivated you are to understand client context. To name a few, being able to identify the commercial pressures, risk tolerances and strategic priorities of every client will take you very far. Additionally, cultivating trust requires listening carefully, transparent communication and consistently working with the client’s broader interests and objectives at the forefront.
What do you find most interesting about the legal sector/Goodwin?
In the legal sector, I love the variety of industries and people that interact with the law on a daily basis. Being a corporate lawyer provides a fantastic avenue to meet people who are doing some of the most exciting work in the world and play a real part in their journey. That’s what stands out about Goodwin, too—the firm's deep industry expertise means we get great exposure to that breadth of work. Also, I couldn’t write this without mentioning the incredible view from the terrace of Goodwin’s Sancroft office, which has to be one of the best in London!
How did you find your vacation scheme experience?
I really enjoyed it! I was able to meet people across different teams and get a sense of both the culture and the work. Everyone was incredibly generous with their time, and I was struck by how friendly and down-to-earth everyone was. The senior leadership in particular was really approachable and took the time to get to know us. Overall, it was definitely busy, but I felt like I was able to make the absolute most of it.
