Book open Reading time: 3 mins

Entering the professional world can feel overwhelming, but interviews are a great chance to show your potential. Here are some practical tips to help you prepare and perform with confidence:

Be yourself and show enthusiasm

We want to see your genuine interest in SMBC and the role:

  • Research our company, values, and current industry trends.
  • Research the programme, role and department you have applied for
  • Be ready to talk about why you’re excited to join the team and what you hope to learn.
  • Prepare thoughtful questions to ask your interviewers—this shows curiosity and initiative.

Example

“I’m excited about this opportunity because I’ve always been interested in cybersecurity from a young age doing things like hackathons, global web challenges, creating my own home VPN system at the age of 16 and I’m eager to learn from professionals how this works in the financial sector with the implementation of AI and other threats that are currently going on geopolitically. I am aware SMBC have been involved in XYZ initiatives to tackle this and it would be lifechanging to be a part of that.”

Draw on all your experiences

You don’t need formal work experience—academic projects, volunteering, part-time jobs, or extracurriculars all count.

Example

“During my second year at university, I worked on a group project for a module focused on cybersecurity risk assessment. Our team needed to research and present a comprehensive analysis of a real-world security breach, including causes, impacts, and mitigation strategies. I took the lead on the research phase, gathering credible sources and organizing findings. I also created a shared timeline to ensure we met deadlines and coordinated tasks among team members to keep us on track. We delivered a well-structured presentation and received positive feedback from our lecturer for our teamwork and depth of analysis. This experience taught me how to manage tasks effectively, communicate clearly, and collaborate in a team setting skills I’m eager to bring into a professional environment. “
