Tell us a bit about yourself and your role

I’m Aamu, an Assistant Manager in the Employer Solutions team, based in the London office. I joined S&W as an Associate in 2022 and recently completed my three years of studies to become ACA-qualified.

Our team sits within the Business Tax department and focuses on three main areas: Employment Taxes, Global Mobility, and Reward. I found myself especially drawn to the Reward space during my second year at S&W. It includes both advisory and compliance work around how businesses incentivise and reward their employees – things like designing share and cash-based incentive schemes, supporting on business transactions and structuring, preparing annual ‘employment related securities’ returns and much more. We also frequently work on projects with international aspects, often collaborating with advisors and lawyers in countries like the US and Canada to design share incentive schemes for groups of companies with an international workforce.

Why did you choose Employer Solutions and what do you enjoy most about working in this team?

I really appreciated how supportive my team was when I expressed my wishes to specialise rather early on. The team helped me shape my workload so I could focus on the kind of projects I was most passionate about, and they continue to check in with me regularly to ensure my weeks are filled with work I enjoy and that is useful for my learning. This is just one example of the kind of flexibility and encouragement that has been a consistent theme throughout my time here – everyone is genuinely invested in helping you grow and enjoy your work.

I originally applied for a graduate role in a different department that I thought aligned more closely with my degree in Economics and Finance. However, as the role was filled, I was offered the chance to interview for a position in business tax, and I’m so glad I said yes as I’ve come to really enjoy the variety and challenge that working in tax at S&W offers.

What advice would you give someone considering applying?

My advice to new applicants is to be yourself and bring the spark of your personality to your interview. Don’t worry about having all the technical knowledge at the start of your career – what I think matters most is your enthusiasm, curiosity and willingness to learn, so you should absolutely ask all the questions you may have!

Why would you recommend S&W as a great place to work?

I would genuinely encourage anyone who enjoys a mix of numbers, writing and engaging with clients and colleagues, and is keen to learn from some really experienced and brilliant colleagues, to consider a career in tax at S&W. Alongside interesting pieces of work and client interactions, such as presenting a proposal to a client alongside the Head of Tax at S&W, some of my favourite memories have come from the friendships I’ve built here, including study sessions in London cafés, running a race with a close friend I met at work, and celebrating Birthdays, promotions, exam passes and other milestones together.
