From Intern to Analyst: My Journey in Change at BNY

When I joined BNY as an intern in FX Operations, supporting the Confirmations and Settlements team, I didn't expect to be presenting to senior leaders within weeks. But that's exactly what happened. I led a transformation project, built a business case and presented my recommendations to leaders across Markets. It taught me something I still carry with me: good ideas can come from anyone, whatever their level of experience.

After winning the Business for Good intern competition, I was invited back to support workshops and project work. Returning to BNY felt like coming home.

A day in the life

Today, I'm an Analyst in Change for Execution Services. I work across FX, Fixed Income, Equities and Derivatives, so no two days look the same.

My day often starts with Operations, getting to know how a process really works. I sit with subject matter experts to capture the investigative decisions and problem solving behind their work. Recently, I've been mapping how FX trade exceptions are handled, highlighting the key decision points, control checks and bottlenecks along the way.

Then comes the fun part: working out how to make it better. I use data to pinpoint the exceptions that take the most manual effort, showing where automation will add the most value. That evidence is what turns an idea into a business case. Later in the day, I might be working with Engineering on solutions, exploring tools like Alteryx and Power BI, or turning my findings into a clear story for senior stakeholders

Connecting to the bigger picture

What I enjoy most is seeing how my work supports BNY's strategic pillars. Simpler processes help us run our company better. Fewer exceptions help us be more for our clients. And being trusted to take ideas to senior leaders as a graduate is a great example of how we power our early careers culture.

Looking back, the biggest change since my first day as an intern is my confidence. BNY has given me room to learn, challenge myself and make a real contribution, and I'm excited to see where the journey goes next.
