Nuclear and Marine – Plymouth (Undergraduates studying STEM based degrees)
What you’ll be doing
You will be based in one of our design, safety or facility management offices working with the teams who maintain the facilities at Devonport, Plymouth to support the MoD and Royal Navy.
What you’ll get out of it
Half of the entire Royal Navy surface fleet is based in Devonport, so you’ll spend your summer getting hands-on with some of the world’s most advanced naval technology. You’ll have a variety of different opportunities, working as part of technical departments, project management or production teams.
What you’ll need
- To be studying a STEM degree
- To be able to satisfy the MoD’s security requirements (you may need to complete a medical assessment)
Nuclear - Bristol (Undergraduates studying STEM based degrees)
What you’ll be doing
You will be based in one of our design, safety or facility management offices working with the teams who maintain the facilities at Devonport, Plymouth to support the MoD and Royal Navy.

Marine – Bristol (Undergraduates studying STEM based degrees)
What you’ll be doing
You will be based in one of our engineering management offices within the Bristol office and could be working on a variety of disciplines such as Mechanical or Electrical or Systems Engineering.

You’ll spend your summer getting hands-on with some of the world’s most advanced naval technology. You’ll have a variety of different opportunities, working as part of technical departments, project management or production teams.

Nuclear and Marine – Plymouth (Quantity Surveying)
What you’ll be doing
You’ll work with a variety of different teams in Plymouth. You’ll take on challenges and be given the chance to experience our dynamic commercial business unit. You can expect to get involved in most aspects of a project’s lifecycle associated with the functions of a Quantity Surveyor with a diverse range of projects across our business (£10k to £100m). We will teach you the required commercial and contract management skills needed to excel at all tasks.
What you’ll get out of it
To ensure you get the most out of the experience, you will be assigned a buddy, mentor and manager. You will also have regular performance reviews and attend sessions to help you develop key skills. There will be plenty of opportunity to visit our other sites and meet placement students. During your time with us, you will meet a range of people, from graduates to directors, who will share their experiences and expand your industry knowledge. If you have a successful summer with us, you will be fast-tracked through the graduate assessment process.

- To be studying for a degree in Quantity Surveying or a related subject
- To be able to satisfy the MoD’s security requirements (you may need to complete a medical assessment)
Marine – Energy and Marine – Rosyth (Electrical)
What you’ll be doing
At our Rosyth site, we’re specialists in the design and engineering of complex marine platforms, as well as the lead contractor for the UK Submarine Dismantling Programme. We are also world leaders in the development and supply of Gas Systems. You could be involved in any of these extraordinary engineering projects or you may get involved in something completely new. As long as you are bursting with ideas and enthusiasm, we’ll have something for you to get your teeth into.
What you’ll get out of it
During the summer placement, you’ll get the opportunity to work in a department relevant to your degree subject so you can start putting theory into practice. You can expect to work on current projects where you’ll have real input and learn how to work safely in a workplace environment.
What you’ll need
- To be in Year 3 (or above) in your studies of a relevant degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering
- To be able to satisfy the MoD’s security requirements (you may need to complete a medical assessment)
Marine-Energy and Marine – Rosyth (Mechanical)
What you’ll be doing

What you’ll be doing
Working across the Business Development, New Product Development, Sales and Commercial teams, you will be involved in analysing both core and new markets to ensure the business’ strategy aligns with market and customer demands. There will also be opportunities to get involved in marketing, the development of online customer portal and events.

Nuclear – Plymouth (Nuclear Safety Engineering)
What you’ll be doing
As part of the Nuclear sector, our 5,500-strong business based out of Plymouth is a strategic partner of the MoD and the Royal Navy. You could be based in one of our design, safety or facility management offices working with the teams who undertake 100% of submarine refits as well as 75% of UK surface fleet refits and 50% of fleet maintenance work.
What you’ll get out of it
You’ll be part of a multi-disciplinary team that includes Health Physicists, Engineers and Human Factors specialists working together to ensure that our operations remain safe. You’ll spend 12 weeks learning about the role Safety Engineering has to play in our company. You’ll have to get your head around a lot of different factors to spot where the weaknesses might lie. So, you’ll be learning about everything from production and manufacturing, to project management, design and safety. You may be working on projects within the commercial Marine sector, or refits for submarines or warships for the Royal Navy.

- To be studying for a Science, Engineering or Maths degree
