    Casualty

    Casualty is the multi-award-winning medical drama broadcast on primetime BBC One.

    As one of the longest-running and beloved TV dramas in the UK, it consistently delves into sensitive and challenging depiction of those on the frontline in the NHS, while continually pushing the boundaries of conventional television week after week. The show’s gritty realism is brought to life in Cardiff by one of the most dedicated and hard-working creative teams, both on-screen and off, delivering high-quality, gritty drama with heart, humour and pathos.

    Main Responsibilities

    What is a Make-up Junior?

    A Make-up Junior at Casualty works at the heart of the hair and makeup team. This 6 month opportunity gives the successful candidate the opportunity to spend 6 months learning from one of the most creative, hardworking and fast-paced makeup teams in television. Casualty work to a 5 day week.

    The Casualty Make-Up Department has a real team spirit, we have several levels of artists who all bring something different skill wise into the mix, from the HOD, Designer, Assistants and Juniors. It’s a fantastic place to learn and develop new skills and work your way up the ladder, it’s fantastic to work with so many experienced and talented people, plus get your teeth into a long running diverse drama that’s prime time television

    The role of the Makeup Trainee reports to Kirstie Stanway.

    Working to Series Makeup Designer, the successful candidate will have an understanding of the principles, practices and roles for make-up in television and film production. To also show a keen interest in the Casualty show and have familiarised themselves with the show.

    The Make-up Junior’s main duties will include:

    • Interpreting the Make-Up Supervisor’s instructions and carrying out basic and changes to on-set standby make-up and hair work for the artists, always adhering to and following the correct procedures for all continuity and applying a high level of practical skills.
    • Joining the Casualty Make-up team, the successful candidate will liaise with all make-up and production staff to ensure that all deadlines are met whilst receiving training in all aspects of this creative department.
    • It is vital to always ensure to follow safe working practices that comply with the Health and Safety guidelines & legislation and ensure that BBC output reflects the diverse nature of our audiences.
    • Communicating with makeup colleagues, actors and other departments.
    • Setting up and maintaining workstations, including loading and unloading make-up and hair kits between locations.
    • Apply and fix crowd SA’s make-up and hair
    • Basic knowledge of script reading/breakdown taking continuity into consideration.
    • Be able to take and file photos for continuity.
    • To be able to stocktake and order supplies when needed and undertake general admin duties for the department

    About you

    To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate the following:

    • Applicants must have at least 2/3 Years’ Training from a BTEC/College of Further Education, HDN/HNC, Degree or a Level 4/5 NVQ.
    • The applicant must have 3 TV, Film or Theatre credits, at a Trainee or Junior level.
    • To be experienced in carrying out general make-up applications and maintenance to a high standard
    • To be able to work under pressure in a fast-paced operational environment.
    • To be confident in carrying out general make-up applications and maintenance to a high standard and timescale.
    • To be able to interpret and break-down a script
    • To be able to deal with all colleagues, actors and supporting artists with diplomacy and tact.
    • To be able to work as part of a team.
    • To be able to clearly and concisely communicate information.
    • To be able to problem-solve in creative ways.
    • To have a keen eye for detail.
    • To be able to prioritise and effectively organise work.
    • Flexibility of working occasional night or weekend shoots.
    • Be able to keep clean tidy work areas adhering to safe working practices that comply with the Health and Safety guidelines & legislation.

    We would ideally also require the following

    • To have own basic kit
    • To have good computer skills.
    • To have a valid and clean driving license
