Centrica Energy is the trading arm of Centrica. We trade LNG, gas, power and energy attributes - and connect independent producers, suppliers and corporate off-takers in the wholesale energy markets.
Centrica Energy's window out onto the international wholesale commodity markets. The teams here execute procurement and risk management strategies for Centrica’s retail arm, British Gas, run a stellar proprietary trading business (covering Gas, Power and Oil products) and Global Gas. We are also at the forefront of the decarbonization agenda, being Europe's largest manager and optimizer of renewable assets.
It’s an entrepreneurial and innovative business which is heavily dependent on quality analytics in an ever increasing digitalised and fast paced trading landscape to support commercial decision-making and risk management. Centrica Energy has developed a successful asset-backed trading business model where we apply algorithmic trading, automation and cutting-edge analytics to our growing cross commodity portfolio.
You’ll work across a wide range of teams and functions, potentially including trading and optimisation, Global Gas, origination, finance, risk and more. Throughout, you’ll be supporting key commercial decisions relating to both commodity contracts and trading strategies.
What you’ll be doing
As a Graduate Commodity Trading Analyst, you’ll do three eight-month placements over two years, learning how to approach a variety of business problems by working alongside experienced analysts. Each placement has its own unique set of challenges and provides you with a steep learning curve. You may also have the chance to spend a placement in Denmark.
We’ll expect you to deliver real business results from your first placement onwards. To enable this, we are committed to supporting your on-the-job learning with formal behavioural and technical training and a structured performance management process.
We have a few must-haves
We are looking for graduates who can use high-calibre analysis to influence key commercial business decisions. You must have:
- Working towards or recently obtained a minimum 2:1 degree combined with a Master’s in a highly numerical subject such as Applied Economics, Computer Science, Engineering (e.g. Chemical, Mechanical, etc), Mathematics, Physics or similar
- Understanding of and preferably experience in programming e.g. Python, Matlab, C, Java
- Ability to work with models, make and test hypotheses and turn data into insightful information
- Strong interest in the practical application of analytical techniques
- High level of commercial awareness - focus on making money for the business
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
- Flexibility to undertake a placement in our Denmark office
