Get on the Fast Stream and you’ll be encouraged, enabled and empowered to become a Civil Service leader, tackling the issues that matter to you and UK life. Whatever you want to achieve, whatever your degree subject or background, there’s something here for you.
What could I be involved in as a Property Fast Streamer?
As a Property Fast Streamer, you’ll be at the heart of making our properties more sustainable, better located for all the UK population, and adaptable to reflect the way people want to work in the future.
Across government we occupy around 2% of the UK’s land area. Worth half a trillion pounds, our estate costs over £20 billion each year to run. It’s complex work on a huge scale, offering great development opportunities for you.
Working on the UK’s largest and most varied estate you’ll be involved with developing strategy, planning and delivering projects that will build a more sustainable estate for delivering public services. You’ll gain a broad range of property experience working across different central government departments and agencies, with teams of experts in different specialisms.
During the 4-year programme you’ll learn how we value, acquire, build, sell and let buildings. And, delivering projects ranging from building new prisons, refurbishing historic buildings to improving the delivery of essential services, you’ll learn how to procure or manage contracts and services to ensure buildings are fit for purpose. You’ll also be part of a sustainability drive that will see the UK carbon zero by 2050.
Growing your knowledge, skills and experience
Each of your four 1-year postings will have a specific focus such as property lifecycle, facilities management, workplace management, future skills or leadership. These will vary depending on the skills you need to develop and the professional body to want to pursue membership of.
We’ll support you to gain accreditation with either the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) or the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management (IWFM). Your professional accreditation pathway will be tailored to your existing qualifications.
You’ll also grow the wider knowledge and essential leadership skills you need to become a future Property leader. We’ll enable your development and network-building through leadership training, mentorship and community events.
To apply, you’ll need
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- A 2:2 or higher (or be expecting to achieve this) in any degree subject, including degree apprenticeships.
We support applicants with health conditions, learning difficulties and disabilities, with their applications and through their Civil Service careers. We operate a Guaranteed Interview Scheme. If you have a disability and meet the minimum qualifying criteria for your chosen scheme, you may choose to skip part of the first stage of the assessment process.
