You’ll receive excellent on-the-job training from our highly respected and experienced insurance professionals, together with a structured learning programme designed to develop your financial and business acumen as well as skills essential for your future career, such as leadership and delivering coherent, concise and compelling presentations.

Is it for me?

Are you curious, eager to learn and try new things? Are you detail oriented and comfortable working with data? Can you combine your strong analytical skills with an ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of individuals? Do you have the courage to ask difficult questions and challenge the status quo? If you’re answering yes to these questions, our actuarial graduate programme is for you.

Tell me more!

You’ll complete three 9 month long rotations within the actuarial function, experiencing Capital Management, Pricing and Reserving. Rotations help you to gain an understanding of the actuarial function, develop a broad skill set and build relationships across the business.

Your rotations are not about job shadowing! You will make a real contribution to the team you’re in and be set challenging work that stretches you. Below gives you a flavour of the type of work you can expect to be involved in in each of your rotations:

Capital Management

You’ll support the production of risk profile information to enable the business and governance committees to monitor and manage against risk appetite, and to feed into the production of risk and solvency assessments. You’ll also support the production of information to add value to business decisions such as reinsurance purchase, asset strategy and capital allocation. As part of the Capital Management team, you will provide input into the modelling and parameterisation of the different models in the light of market or regulatory developments, including carrying out analysis of underwriting risk assumptions. Producing model outputs in a timely fashion and ensuring clear and effective communication of results is also a core activity in this team.

Pricing

As part of the Pricing team in one of our diverse business units in the UK (Hiscox London Market, Hiscox Re & ILS or Hiscox UK), you’ll provide analytical support for underwriters and management through large risk pricing, model development and portfolio analysis.  You’ll find insight in large data sets, exploring around the subject to gain competitive advantage. You’ll use new techniques to help the business get the most from its data, as well as providing high quality pricing analysis to help assess the expected profitability of new opportunities. During your rotation in Pricing you’ll hone your ability to communicate complex issues clearly and concisely to a wide variety of stakeholders, working closely with the business to develop your commercial understanding.

Reserving

In this rotation, you can expect to be involved building new reserving models and parameterising existing models. You are likely to work on different projects such as deep dives in to parts of our business or reserve risks analysis. As part of the Reserving team, you will continually work to improve and develop processes and key analysis. You’ll have lots of opportunity to develop strong working relationships with key stakeholders across the business and your ability to communication with them effectively will be key to your success in this rotation.

We’re not a huge organisation and you’ll find that we’re more focussed on business partnering than Actuarial functions in larger organisations. Our unique business mix brings variety to the work that happens in the function, and offers lots of options in terms of career opportunities after the graduate programme has finished.
