MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people and way of life. We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners, including MI6 and GCHQ to disrupt these threats. A role in MI5 means you’ll do unique and challenging work in a supportive and encouraging environment, making a real difference to UK national security.

    About the role

The Intelligence and Data Analyst Development Programme forms the start of a five-year career pathway. You’ll begin with a four-month training period where you’ll learn all about the role, become familiar with our processes, and get to know the rest of your cohort, before taking on three data analyst postings within the organisation. You could be working on a range of strategic and tactical tasks, growing your technical skills, or working closely with colleagues in your delivery team as well as Intelligence Officers and external partners. In doing so, you’ll develop advanced data analysis techniques that’ll help to protect the UK. You’ll be taught everything you need to know on the programme, so you don’t need to be a data expert to join – just be yourself.

You’ll experience a range of unique data and use tools you won’t find elsewhere as you turn raw information into vital intelligence. You’ll identify patterns and trends and come up with creative solutions to problems by making connections. Once you’ve discovered vital information, you’ll present your findings to others and help shape real investigations. And, as this is a development role, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to learn, grow and expand your talents. As you progress, you might find yourself improving our capabilities in certain areas, or training others to develop their analytical skills. Working at the heart of national security, you’ll see your impact every day.

    Who we're looking for

There’s no ‘type’ of person who works in data. You’ll be naturally curious, determined and genuinely interested in building a career in this field. With your eye for detail, you’ll spot things others don’t and enjoy working collaboratively. Logical and detail-oriented, you’ll approach problems like puzzles you need to solve. You’ll keep going until you get the solution; likewise, you’ll recognise when you’ve done enough and prioritise your time effectively.

While you don’t need coding or programming skills to join, you’ll have some experience analysing data and be keen to develop your abilities further. You’ll also have (or be expecting) a 2:2 degree in any subject or have work experience where you have demonstrated some of the key skills and qualities required for success in the role.

As well as dedicated training and support, you’ll also enjoy a range of great benefits including 25 days’ annual leaving (rising to 30 after 5 years’ service), a personal learning budget, an interest-free season ticket loan, cycle to work scheme, paid parental and adoption leave, and access to our on-site facilities including a gym, restaurant and coffee bars.
