This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience across strategy, operations and major project delivery working on initiatives that have a real impact.

What you’ll do

As a Graduate, you’ll gain experience across Network Strategy, Highways Operations and Major Projects, giving you a broad understanding of how transport systems are planned, managed and delivered. You’ll contribute to live projects and day to day service delivery, with opportunities to:

  • Analyse transport and asset data to support decision making
  • Use GIS and emerging technologies (including AI) to map and monitor the network
  • Assist with site visits, surveys and inspections
  • Support delivery of transport policies, strategies and business cases
  • Contribute to performance dashboards and reporting tools
  • Get involved in Streetworks coordination and network management
  • Support Highways Operations and Network Delivery

What you’ll be working on

You could be involved in a wide range of impactful work, including but not limited to:

  • Major infrastructure projects improving connectivity and resilience
  • LED street lighting upgrades, reducing carbon emissions and energy use
  • Local Transport Plan development, shaping future travel across the region
  • Active travel schemes supporting walking and cycling
  • Highway asset management, working with data to improve network performance
  • Streetworks permitting and lane rental schemes to minimise disruption
  • Highways Operations and Network Delivery, supporting the design and delivery of a wide-ranging program of works on the ground, including carriageway and footway maintenance, drainage improvements, junction upgrades, and local safety schemes

All of this contributes to maintaining a network that includes 6,000 miles of roads, 2,000 bridges and 65,000 streetlights.

Who we’re looking for

We’re seeking Graduates currently studying a subject related to Highways, Transportation, or Engineering such as Transport Planning, Civil Engineering or Geography. You’ll also bring strong analytical and problem solving skills, good communication and teamwork, a proactive attitude and willingness to learn and a genuine interest in transport, infrastructure or public service. If you’re ready to roll up your sleeves and make a difference, we want to hear from you.

This placement is designed to give you real experience. You will:
