What will I do on the programme?

This year we have graduate opportunities within our Transmission business for those with an Electrical Engineering discipline.

The Successful candidate will spend two years following a programme that will develop the individual into an HVDC or HVAC Project Engineering role. The programme offers the opportunity to spend time across the wider Transmission business, including Project Engineering, Operations, Project Delivery and System Planning. By working collaboratively across multi-disciplined and diverse teams, and through innovative thinking our Graduates will support the delivery of new assets onto the Electricity Transmission Network, unlocking Scotland’s renewables potential and providing the network capacity required to help SSE and the UK meet its net-zero targets.

Electricity Transmission is a key enabler for a carbon-neutral energy system, allowing efficient transmission of large amount of electricity over long distances and aiding the integration of renewables onto the Transmission Network. We specialise in the movement of power through HVAC and HVDC infrastructure that connect renewable energy sources to the Electricity Network, playing a pivotal role in meeting the UK’s net-zero targets. With SSEN-Transmission geographically positioned in windiest areas of UK, we are expanding rapidly in our HVDC Engineering team, to design build operate and maintain the infrastructure required to harness this abundance of renewable power.

You will bring enthusiasm and innovative thinking to problem solving and will develop a detailed understanding of the electricity transmission network and the technology needed to ensure the network meets the ever-changing demands facing the UK’s energy infrastructure.

You will be immersed in the highly technical and advancing world of HVDC and HVAC Engineering, learning about the high voltage primary plant and equipment on our network, the ancillary systems our substations, converter stations and switching stations rely on, the technical studies required to facilitate design and the key technical interfaces across different engineering disciplines. You will also have the opportunity to gain experience in other aspects required for project delivery including specification writing and contract management as well as technical evaluation of contractor’s design proposals.

We offer our graduates experience and support they need to develop their careers towards professional accreditation. You will be allocated a mentor to coach you through your early career development and work with you to ensure you have the right opportunities to meet your personal development goals.
