If you’re a Student or Graduate, then after clearing our online assessments, you will be invited to participate in the On-Demand Video Interview (ODVI)—a short, self-recorded video where candidates can tell us about themselves by answering some of our questions. To make most out of this and succeed, here are a few simple tips for you to follow:

1. Take advantage of being able to set your own time and place
Option to self-record the video means you can complete it whenever you’re at your sharpest. Time and place of the video is up to you. Make sure you’re prepared and have good internet connection.
2. Do your homework on the company and programme
Just like in any other interview, you will feel better if you do some research beforehand. Learn about Shell and the role you are applying for so that you can be clear on your goals and motivations when answering the questions.
3. Drive your CAR
When preparing for your video interview, look back on your achievements and experiences. Write down instances where you explored new opportunities, resolved difficult situations, and successfully worked with others. Having a collection of real-life stories that demonstrate your role and contribution will be very helpful when responding questions using CAR framework (Capacity, Achievement and Relationships).
4. Treat it like a video call
Interviews— whether in person or by video can be unnerving. Try treating it as though you are on a video call with a friend telling all about your achievements, and you’d be surprised at how comfortable the experience can be!
5. Use a STAR to be a star
While presentation skills are important, our Shell recruiters value the context and quality of your answers over how comfortable (or uncomfortable) you may be on video. A good way to structure your answers is with the STAR method. While responding to the questions and providing real-life examples, always cover these 4 aspects: Situation, Task, Action, and Result.
6. Focus on “me”
While it’s good to show that you are a team player, don’t forget to highlight your achievements as an individual. Make sure to identify clearly what role YOU specifically played in any example you share.
Time to shine!
Your ODVI is your moment to shine—make it count. With the flexibility to choose your time and setting, and the tools to structure your responses effectively, you have everything you need to succeed. By preparing thoughtfully, showcasing your unique contributions, and staying authentic, you’ll not only complete the interview—you’ll stand out. So take a deep breath, be yourself, and let your story speak for your potential.
