Data and intelligence go hand-in-hand. At MI5, we collect all kinds of complex (and often incomplete) data that’s turned into operation-shaping intelligence. We rely on a dedicated team of Data Analysts to do it, and you could train to be one of them.
On our Intelligence and Data Analyst Development Programme (IDADP) you’ll gain the skills and experience you need to join this vital team. You’ll start with an initial training period to give you the fundamentals you need, before working on real projects alongside our friendly colleagues. So, you’ll combine on-the-job learning with dedicated training, and build a fascinating, rewarding career along the way.
Plus, you’ll start as part of a cohort all beginning at the same level. You’ll be surrounded by people who share your desire to learn. After all, this is a development role. You don’t need any previous experience to apply, as we’ll teach you everything you need to know.
We spoke to one IDADP graduate, who is now a fully trained Data Analyst. Here’s what they had to say about their experience…
What surprised you about the IDADP?
“My perception was that the work would be too technical for me. However, the main requirement was a willingness to learn and nobody expects an expert from day one. There are lots of learning and development opportunities so you feel looked after even beyond the new entrant training.”
What are the key skills you’ll need?
“Critical thinking is essential. You might be passed some data and your task is to validate its accuracy, so you ask where has it come from? Could it be out of context? Is it the right format? Communication is important, too. Your analysis is only as good as your ability to present it to others. You have to convince people to make a decision or take action off the back of your work.”
What do you enjoy about being a Data Analyst?
“The main reason I love my job is the subject matter. There’s lots of careers that involve critical thinking and analysing data, but the opportunity to work on international issues is really rewarding. Knowing your team’s work has real-world impact is really motivating.”
