Angus L, Analyst at Greenhill, discusses his role as an intern and his top tips for applications.
Why did you decide to apply for an internship at Greenhill?
I decided to apply to Greenhill after hearing about the learning opportunities and early exposure that both interns and analyst receive. After meeting people at the firm during the application process, this was reinforced by everyone I spoke to. They were engaged, approachable and very open in providing advice. It was clear that the people at Greenhill genuinely invested time in getting to know candidates, which made the firm stand out to me.
What were the biggest challenges of getting up to speed?
The biggest challenge was managing multiple competing deadlines whilst learning on the job. Learning how to communicate effectively with different team members to ensure these deadlines were managed successfully was also an important part of getting up to speed.
What was the most rewarding part of your internship?
The case study at the end of the internship was particularly rewarding. It gave me the opportunity to put into practice the different pieces of analysis I had learnt throughout the programme, while also developing my presentation skills by discussing the project with senior colleagues who were engaged, supportive and challenging in equal measure. Looking back at what I had produced compared to my work at the beginning of the internship really highlighted the progress I had made.
Additionally, I worked with teams of different sizes throughout the internship, including directly with senior colleagues. This exposure gave me a valuable insight into the role of an analyst and was a great learning experience, particularly because everyone was so generous with their time and willing to provide feedback.
What skills did you develop and use most frequently?
Alongside developing technical and analytical skills, written and verbal communication were some of the most important skills I used throughout the internship. Supporting analysts across a variety of workstreams allowed me to learn from their experiences and develop my ability to communicate clearly, manage priorities and adapt to different ways of working.
What advice would you give to students considering an internship at Greenhill?
I would encourage students to apply to Greenhill and to take the opportunities presented throughout both the application process and the internship itself to meet and ask questions of members of the firm.
Everyone has a different route into investment banking, and I found people to be very open in sharing their experiences and providing feedback. Taking the initiative to seek out these conversations is a great way to learn more about both the industry and the firm.
