Meet Alejandra
I grew up in Spain and later moved to London to study Mathematics with Economics at UCL. During the summer of second year at university, Nuveen offered me the opportunity to join the 10-week internship program, in the Madrid office.
Following this experience, I started the graduate program at Nuveen’s London office, where I have now been for over a year. Working across different offices has been extremely valuable, as it has given me exposure to multiple markets.
Your internship journey
What team did you intern with, and what was your main focus during your internship?
I interned in HAST, the Housing and Alternatives team, which focuses on residential assets as well as alternative sectors such as student accommodations (PBSA) and self- storage. During my internship, I had the opportunity to be involved in the disposition of a PBSA asset in Porto, Portugal. This experience was particularly valuable, as it gave me access to all the documentation required for the transaction, a clear explanation of the overall process and a practical understanding of how a deal is expected.
In addition, I had the chance to visit several retail assets in Madrid and attended related meetings, which allowed me to gain exposure to the retail sector and develop a broader understanding of how different asset classes are managed and evaluated.
The real experience
What has been the single most important thing you learnt so far in your job?
The value of asking questions.
There is no such thing as a “too simple” question when the intention is to learn. Asking question demonstrates engagement and a genuine desire to learn, and colleagues are willing to offer support when they see this commitment. This also requires personal initiative, such as reading independently, paying close attention during meetings and becoming familiar with relevant topics.
