The real experience
What has been the single most important thing you learnt so far in your job?
The most important thing I have learnt is how to navigate and contribute within a larger organisation. Understanding how different teams work together, and how our technical work supports wider goals of the business has really helped me grow. Moving from software development into data engineering--along with starting my data engineering apprenticeship-- has given me more exposure and helped me build confidence in both my technical and problem-solving skills.
Culture & community
Have you had the opportunity to get involved in any activities outside work?
One of my favourite parts of this past year has been getting involved in things outside my core role. I took part in the South downs charity -- it was a great experience that combined doing something good with connecting with people from across the business.
Advice for future interns
Looking back at the application process, what advice would you give your past self?
I'd tell myself not to stress so much about the small technical parts and to trust that enthusiasm and curiosity really do make a difference. I'd remind myself to be confident in what I already knew, ask lots of questions, and just be myself throughout the process. Reflecting back, I recognize that Nuveen was just as much interested in my potential as my actual experience-- so I'd reassure my past self that it's okay to not have everything figured out yet.
What's the one thing you wish someone had told you before applying to Nuveen?
I wish someone had told me how supportive the people would be here. Having a manager who genuinely cares about my development and encourages me to explore new areas(like attending data conferences and trying new tools) has made such a positive impact. Knowing I'd be joining a team where people want you to grow would've made the application process feel a lot less intimidating.
