Meet Edwin, aspiring solicitor at Helix Law

Meet Edwin

I graduated from the University of Nottingham with a first in Law in 2023. At the point of leaving University aged 21, I wasn’t exactly sure what was next for me.

Having spent the summer applying for numerous jobs in various sectors, I was eventually given the opportunity to interview with Alex. I found Alex to have a very refreshing approach, and he seemed genuinely interested not only in what I could offer Helix but also in how I could fit in with the firm’s culture.

I followed that up with an interview with Jonathan, where again I felt immediately engaged, although admittedly, my primary memory of our discussion is of talking about football.

I am currently coming up to two years with Helix. In that time, I have had a wide range of experiences, including attending trials, hearings in the High Court, and mediations. As with anything, the first 6-12 months were tough, being new and inexperienced. I feel I have grown both in terms of my output and also as a person more generally – I think that speaks volumes about the opportunities available to you at Helix. That being said, the work continues to be challenging and, in all honesty, stressful. In my opinion, that is more of a blessing than a curse. Knowing that what you're doing is important and high-value work is only a motivator – it has to be.

In my view, Helix’s greatest strength is the ability to, on the one hand, push you to be independent and give you every chance to do so, but on the other, to offer support when you need it. That blend is the mix you absolutely need if you want to develop into a high-quality litigator. I have the self-awareness to know that I am very much at the start of that journey, and there is a long way to go, but as a professional, the environment at Helix is one I’m proud to be a part of.

My immediate goal is to keep pushing on at Helix and qualify as a solicitor.
