My Experience on the Kaika Programme: Joseph

By SMBC
Joe

Joining the Kaika graduate scheme at SMBC has been an incredibly rewarding and transformative experience. Over the course of my rotations across Corporate Banking, Credit Risk, and Leveraged Finance, I’ve gained a holistic understanding of the bank’s operations and developed a strong foundation in financial services. Each rotation offered unique challenges and learning opportunities, allowing me to build both technical expertise and professional confidence. The structured support, mentorship, and exposure to senior leaders have been instrumental in my growth, and I’ve always felt encouraged to ask questions and take on new responsibilities.

What I enjoy most about working at SMBC

What stands out most to me about SMBC is the genuinely collaborative and inclusive culture. From day one, I’ve been welcomed as a valued member of the team, with colleagues always willing to share their knowledge and support my development. The bank’s commitment to professional growth is evident through regular training sessions, networking events, and opportunities to get involved in meaningful projects. I particularly enjoy the dynamic environment, each day brings new challenges and opportunities, and I’m continually inspired by the expertise and collaboration of colleagues across departments.

Advice for Future Kaika Programme applicants

If you’re considering applying to the Kaika Programme, my advice is to be curious and proactive. Take full advantage of the rotational structure to explore different areas of the bank and discover where your interests and strengths lie. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, some of my most valuable experiences came from tackling unfamiliar tasks and seeking feedback. Most importantly, embrace the opportunity to build relationships; the connections you make here will be invaluable throughout your career. The Kaika Programme is a fantastic opportunity to launch your career in banking, and I highly recommend it to anyone eager to learn, grow, and make an impact.
