Alex Cook on Helix's values and visions

If you’re a graduate deciding where to start your legal career, you’ll want more than a place that teaches you how to bill hours. You’ll want a team that treats every dispute as if it were their own, that is positioning itself to thrive and lead the market in technology and innovation to win clients, win cases and be recognised as one of the leading litigation firms in the country. That’s Helix Law.

Who we are, and the future

We’re a firm of specialist litigation solicitors — the largest specialist litigation team in the South East of England. We don’t work in every legal area; we act in litigation and disputes only. We do what we do exceptionally well. Our specialisation gives us depth: we see patterns other firms miss, we develop niche expertise, and we win on substance, approach and strategy.

Over the next five years we plan to double in size; across the next decade our goal is to grow tenfold. That ambition is matched by an operational discipline and a track record of delivering for clients. We’re commercial in our thinking and ruthless in our execution.

We plan to disrupt the leading city firms by using technology and results-based pricing to outflank less agile competitors seeking to protect their legacy revenues.

Our approach and values

Relationships are measured across a lifetime. We build relationships that last — with clients, colleagues and external partners. That includes opponents who go on to use us and opponent solicitors who go on to refer work to us.

Building good relationships means taking a long-term view of how we advise, how we act, and what we expect from talent. We look for people who understand the value of a seat with us and for whom failure is not an option. We look for people prepared to change and to adapt- to technology and efficient ways of working, and for people who will leave no stone left unturned to achieve a win in an environment where we’re constantly being told we’re wrong. Litigation requires a resilience and toughness that isn’t for everyone.

Treating problems as our own

If a dispute is keeping a client awake at night, it should be keeping us awake too. We ‘own’ matters where we’re instructed: we are careful, measured, and relentlessly focused on achieving practical outcomes and positive results. We value high-quality advice over short-term wins, and every file is handled with the same care we’d apply to our own affairs.

Transparency, focus, and integrity

We bring transparency to everything we do. We are focused and undistracted — we pick the fights that matter and marshal our resources where they will make a difference. Honesty and integrity are givens for us and for you; they are non-negotiable. We’re a different breed of solicitor — rigorous, candid, and proud of the ethics that underpin our work.

Rule 1: thinking for ourselves

Everything we do is filtered through “Rule 1” — think for yourself. We challenge norms, question assumptions, and we expect every team member to bring original thought. This culture rewards initiative and independent judgment: qualities you’ll develop and be expected to demonstrate immediately.

Rule 1 thinking is essential in the age of AI.

Entrepreneurial and tech-savvy

We are deeply entrepreneurial. We experiment with new ways of working and accept that trying and failing is part of our growth. We’re closer to being a technology company than a traditional law firm: we use automation, data, and AI at scale to streamline processes, sharpen strategy and give us a significant competitive edge.

This approach is preparing us to flourish and dominate as the billable hour starts to disappear.

Why this all matters for you as a graduate

At Helix Law you won’t be a cog in a machine. We don’t need cogs. We need future partners. You’ll be part of a focused, high-performing team that values curiosity, courage and careful judgment. You will be expected to show you have these attributes from day one and that you share our values. You’ll be expected to think for yourself, challenge assumptions and take personal responsibility for the tasks and matters you work on.

Real work, real responsibility

Graduates at Helix get early exposure to complex litigation, real client contact and genuine responsibility for outcomes. You’ll learn how to craft careful strategy, draft persuasive pleadings, run disclosure and evidence, and use modern tools to streamline and strengthen litigation and business processes. We expect ambition, tenacity, and resilience.

A technology-first practice

If you love tech, you’ll feel at home. We deploy automation, analytics and AI in a tech stack that is constantly evolving to remove repetitive tasks and enhance decision-making. Our lawyers can then focus on strategy, judgment and client advocacy. That means faster learning, better outcomes for clients and the chance to shape how technology changes our business and wider legal practice. We encourage experimentation: bring ideas, test them, learn quickly and help us scale what works.

Be part of building something great; a culture of integrity and grit

We’re frank, focused and relentless about quality. We pick the fights that matter and commit to them. We don’t go into battle alone. We look out for one another, and integrity is expected in every interaction. We reward initiative, clarity of thought and commercial rigour.

Since we were founded in 2012, we have been fully in the cloud from day one. We have offered fixed fees and conditional fees from the start. We push service levels beyond traditional norms. We are looking for people who would like to be a partner in a top 5 litigation firm; people ready to take responsibility for developing the firm with us. If you’re an ambitious litigator we’d love to speak with you.
