A day in the life of Maya’s internship at Schroders, working as an intern in the Global Technology team. Maya takes you through her typical working day in the team, from the daily stand up to manager check ins to after-work drinks with her intern cohort.
I’ve just finished my third year at university studying Economics at the University of Leeds and I am a Global Technology Summer Intern working with the Private Assets Technology team for 8 weeks, before returning to Leeds in September.
9:00am
Every morning we have a daily stand up call, where the team can discuss the tasks they’ve been working on and if they have had any issues or made any progress. I use this time to plan my day and ensure that I am prepared for any meetings ahead, and ask questions if I am stuck on a deliverable.
10:00am
The project I am working on, involves interviewing key stakeholders within each business line in Private Assets and trying to understand what applications they use, and what their capabilities are. My manager and I spend time with the application owner to find out the value of each application and where it is utilised along the business cycle. We will then compare our findings to ensure we have noted all the key findings to feed into our wider model.
11:00am
As part of the summer internship, we are tasked with researching a topic and presenting it to a panel. This is a great chance to meet other interns in different departments and draw on their experiences to create a really engaging presentation.
My group has focused on why ESG is a key focus for investment managers, and the key metrics that help define success for ESG performance. It’s a new area for many of us, so we’ve got our heads in the drawing board and are using Schroders’ extensive learning platforms to help guide our research.
Noon
We have many interactive training sessions delivered online, including focusing on personal branding and presenting skills. Although the sessions are remote, we are put into break out rooms to share ideas and make the experience as collaborative as possible. There’s lots of opportunities to share ideas with the wider group and focus on developing your personal and business skills.
1:00 pm
If I’m in the office, I’ll head down with the other interns and pick up lunch from the Schroders restaurant, before heading to the outside terrace to enjoy some sun and find out what everyone else has been up to.
Often it’s interesting to hear what projects the interns are doing, including those from investment, distribution and product and sometimes help offer solutions with how they can add some code to make their task more efficient, or help sharpen their excel skills!
Schroders currently has a hybrid working model in place, depending on what suits your working style and what you’re most comfortable with.
2:00pm
Back to my desk and ready to schedule some focus time. I’ve been using some new software to extract data, as well as a new tool to visually map models together. I add the new information which we received from the interview in the morning, and update the model and add any queries which have arisen and need clarification. I’ll add the updates to our shared drive so my team can review.
3:30pm
I have a check in with my manager, and share how I have been getting on. He might suggest speaking to someone new to expand my network and explore areas of interest, or he might direct me to some training videos which I note down to do when I have spare time.
We run through how the current project is going, to ensure we are on track, and discuss feedback and further workshops to schedule in.
4:30pm
There’s lots of other projects and groups which you can get involved with at Schroders. I paired up with another technology intern and we spend some time creating testing criteria for a new tool that is being created. We also discuss how our week has been and if there’s any way we can help each other in our projects.
Finally I review my timetable for tomorrow and make sure I have prepared for any important calls in advance to save me time tomorrow!
5:00pm
The interns and I leave the office to grab some dinner and drinks together after a long day of work!
