Writing a Winning Application: Top Tips from a Recruiter

Application season is here, and competition is fierce. Whether you’re aiming for a vacation scheme or a training contract, it can feel overwhelming. The good news? There are concrete things you can do to give yourself the best shot. Having reviewed my fair share of applications, I know what makes one stand out and what makes another fade into the pile. Here are my ten tips to help yours stand out for the right reasons.

1. Know your "why"

Before you start typing, be crystal clear: why law, and why this firm? Don’t just copy the brochure. What is it about being a solicitor that appeals to you over, say, being a barrister? What is it about this firm’s work, culture, or training that makes you want to apply? If you’re not clear on your own reasons, your application will never convince someone else.

2. Be selective

You don’t need to apply to 30 firms. In fact, spreading yourself that thin makes it impossible to tailor properly. Pick a handful of firms that genuinely match your interests and goals and give those your full attention. Targeted, thoughtful applications are the ones that get noticed. Quality always beats quantity.

3. Do your research

“Why this firm?” is the question every recruiter wants answered. And no, the fact they’re “leading” or “renowned” isn’t enough. Dig into the details: the size of their intake, international reach, the sectors they’re strong in, practice areas, the opportunities they offer trainees. Every firm has a unique identity, and you’ll only uncover it if you do the legwork. Use events, social media, press articles, anything you can find. Then tie it back to you.

4. Start early

Applications take longer than you think. And many firms review on a rolling basis, which means waiting until the deadline can put you at a disadvantage. Give yourself breathing room, avoid a last-minute scramble – start early so you can submit ahead of the deadline.

5. Authenticity makes you memorable

Recruiters read hundreds of applications. The ones that stand out show personality and sound human. Don’t be afraid to bring you into your answers – your interests, your journey, your perspective. Let them see who you are because authenticity sticks.

6. Don’t discount non-legal experience

Not all valuable experience happens in law firms. Retail jobs, volunteering, hospitality all build transferable skills. Communication, teamwork, problem-solving, resilience… these are the bread and butter of being a good trainee.

7. Nail the basics

It sounds simple, but it’s where many applicants fall down. Spelling mistakes, poor grammar, or sloppy punctuation signal a lack of attention to detail – fatal in a profession built on precision. Don’t rely on spellcheck alone. Read it through properly. Twice.

8. Answer the actual question

Firms ask questions for a reason. Resist the urge to recycle answers or shoehorn in what you want to say. Focus on the question that you're being asked. Break the question down, stick to the point, and back it up with solid examples.

9. Use AI wisely

Yes, AI is everywhere. Yes, it can help you come up with ideas or tidy up your writing. But don’t let it do the heavy lifting. AI-generated answers are bland, and recruiters can spot them a mile off. Use it as a tool, not a substitute for your own voice.

10. Check, then check again

Before you hit submit, go through your application line by line. Read it. Leave it. Come back and read it again. And if possible, get someone else to read it too. Fresh eyes will pick up mistakes you’ve missed. You want to submit something clean, polished, and confident.

That said, there’s no secret hack to writing a winning application. It’s about clarity, preparation, and showing the best of yourself. Be genuine, be thorough, and take the time to get it right. That’s what will give you the edge.
