Blessing's success story: Securing a graduate role at Vodafone
Blessing is a Computer Science graduate from University of Essex. She secured a place on the Software Engineering Graduate Scheme and now works as a Solution Architect at VodafoneThree.
First, please tell us a little bit about yourself.
“I enjoy diving into technical detail while also engaging in the business side of discussions. This balance has shaped my career path starting in Software Engineering and progressing into Solution Architecture, which blends both worlds perfectly.
Growing up, I was always curious about technology and science and I loved the idea of inventing things. That curiosity led me to study Computer Science at university and ultimately pursue a career where I could solve real-world problems through technology.”
What motivated you to apply for your role?
“I was drawn to the role because it offered the opportunity to work on impactful projects while continuing to grow my technical and strategic skills.
VodafoneThree’s reputation for innovation and its collaborative culture stood out to me.”
What was your application journey like?
“I prepared by researching the company and its current projects. This helped me feel more confident about aligning my skills with their goals.”
What are you most proud of about your journey?
“As a Computer Science graduate, I became proficient in several programming languages including Java, Python and C++. My first project on the Software Engineering graduate programme at Vodafone involved working with C#, a language I hadn’t used before.
Initially, I felt slightly apprehensive about delivering a project in a language I had no prior experience with. However, I quickly recognised the similarities between C# and Java, which helped me feel more confident.
By applying my existing knowledge, collaborating with colleagues who had experience in C# and making use of well-written documentation for C#.NET, I was able to successfully complete the project. It felt incredibly rewarding to adapt to an unfamiliar scenario and come out of it with a new skill – C# is now a language I feel comfortable working with.”
What have you learnt from going through the process?
“The process went as expected because we were briefed on the structure beforehand, which helped reduce uncertainty and improve preparation.”
What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
“My advice would be to attend insight weeks and events such as those hosted by Bright Network.
They can be incredibly valuable if you’re looking to secure a graduate role after university as they offer the chance to attend workshops, connect with multiple organisations and provide the opportunity to ask questions directly to industry professionals.”
