We recently caught up with Namita about how she secured a HR Graduate role with South West Water, her top tips for the application process and how Bright Network helped her secure the role.
What stood out to you about South West Water?
The interactions and recruitment process was representative of the organisational culture. My journey so far and my choice was respected. I really understood what it means to confidently select your firm of choice along with working towards being selected. The support and guidance one receives throughout the process is something I really appreciated and still appreciate while working here.
How did you make your application stand out?
I expressed my enthusiasm to learn. I believe a graduate scheme requires keen interest in growth and building your foundation. I also did my research on the company, especially the areas that mean the most to me. This might not be the same for everyone, so I definitely suggest picking up on a factor that you are passionate about.
What part of the application process did you find the most challenging?
The assessment centre was challenging in a good way as it allowed me to understand my potential in group tasks, presentations and individual interviews. This being my first job, I was quite anxious about how I would perform, so one of the other challenges was trying to control my anxiety and work on my confidence.

How did Bright Network help you secure this role?
I came across this job on Bright Network's job portal which I was constantly using as I found it quite helpful, especially as I received notifications before each deadline. I also was on the student leadership board for an event which helped me build on my networking skills and confidence.

Did you get any feedback in the past that helped you with your application?
I had attended assessment centres before which helped me with my confidence as this wasn't something that I was unfamiliar with. Practising your interviews with someone who is straightforward with their feedback goes a long way in helping you identify your strengths and areas for development.
What are your top tips for tackling tough interview questions?
Take a pause, don't jump in to answer. Your speed does not reflect your confidence or intellect. Take a deep breath while you organise your thoughts. Feel free to even mention these in order. For example, ‘I would like to answer this question by addressing (1) and (2)’.
Keep your answer concise and end with a question such as 'Would you like me to elaborate on any points that I put forth?' instead of providing an in-depth explanation.
What top three tips would you give Bright Network members looking to follow in your footsteps?
- Work Smart. Put yourself out as a unique candidate with your own skill sets instead of trying to be someone you are not.
- Be proud of your achievements - your skills are transferable.
- Don't be afraid to share your enthusiasm, but also state why you are a good fit by researching the company.
