The fundamental role of the Markets division of an investment bank is to help clients to achieve their investment objectives. The key departments within the Markets division are the Sales, Trading and Research departments. It is worthy to note that the ways in which banks label this division vary, for instance Barclays calls this division Global Markets, whereas Citigroup calls it Sales & Trading.
Sales, Sales Trading and Trading teams will normally be split by region, sector or both depending on the bank. For example there may be a Pan European team, Emerging Markets team, Asia Pacific team and a North American team, each dealing with similar asset classes, but which relate to different regions. Teams split by regions may require individuals on the Sales or Sales Trading team to speak a particular language.
