EDF's Application Guide: Steps, Tips & What to Expect

Book open Reading time: 3 mins

Here's a step-by-step guide of EDF's application process so you know what to expect at each stage.

Online application

We check your eligibility against the qualification criteria for the programme.

"By being yourself you'll ensure that not only are you a good fit for the company but, more importantly, the company is the right fit for you!"

Online task

If you’re successful after application, you will be asked to complete an online skills and behaviour-based assessment. This should take between 30 and 45 minutes.

"I completed a virtual assessment and my advice is to be enthusiastic. You can do this by asking lots of questions, offering to take notes in group activities and ensure that other people’s ideas are listened to."

What to expect

  • You don’t need to prepare in advance, but if you’d like, you’ll have the option to try out a practice task before starting the main assessment.
  • You’ll have clear instructions for each task, and you can revisit them if needed.
  • Some tasks may be timed (depending on the programme), but you’ll have breaks between each one.
  • There’s no right or wrong way to approach the tasks - just be yourself!

Once you’ve completed the assessment, you’ll receive a personalised feedback report. This will give you valuable insights into your unique qualities and how they translate into real-world scenarios. We’ll be in touch shortly after to let you know the next steps.

Video interview

This is a one-way interview that can be completed at a time that suits you. You will be asked to record your answers to some motivation and scenario-based questions.

“Stay calm and take it one step at a time, doing multiple applications can seem never-ending but stay positive and keep going through the stages. I know it's a cliché, but just be yourself!”

Here’s how it works:

  • You’ll receive an email with a link to the video interview platform (Willo).
  • You can complete the interview at a time that suits you - just make sure to do it within 5 days of receiving the link.
  • The interview itself will take no more than 15-20 minutes, with 4 questions in total.
  • You’ll have some thinking time before each question, up to 3 minutes to record your response, and the option to re-record if you need to.
  • The questions will focus on your motivation for applying to the role (we’d love to hear what excites you about joining EDF!) and the key skills that are important to the role and programme you’ve applied for.

Assessment centre (Graduates only)

The assessment centre usually takes place virtually and can include: a group exercise, individual exercises, a presentation and a scenario-based or technical interview.

"Don't feel overwhelmed by the assessment centre tasks; the assessors want you to do well! Everyone’s nervous, but details such as using the names of fellow candidates and really listening to build on each other’s ideas are great ways to do well in the group tasks."

The day typically includes:

  • A group exercise where you’ll work with others.
  • Two shorter one-to-one micro-exercises with an assessor.
  • A scenario-based interview that dives into your skills, behaviours, motivations, and values.

You may also be asked to deliver a presentation as part of the interview. If this applies to your assessment, we’ll provide all the details well in advance so you can prepare with confidence.

Remember, this is your chance to shine! We’re here to support you every step of the way.

Scenario-based interview

The scenario-based interview is “live” because it happens in real time with an interviewer.

Offer, onboarding and induction

If you're successful, you'll get an offer, contract, and go through pre-employment checks. Your Early Careers Manager will also be in touch about your induction.
