Get to Know Greenhill: Employee insights

Book open Reading time: 3 mins

We know that one of the best ways to understand what it's like to work at a firm is to hear first hand from their employees. We caught up with Dean, Charlie, Thomas and Emily to see what they had to say...

Dean, Head of UK M&A, Analyst Class of 2010 / Intern Class of 2008

“While many things in this industry have changed in the decade since I was a summer intern in this very office, the position I find myself in today is testament to the incredible opportunity the Greenhill platform provides junior team members to fulfil their potential in an extremely competitive industry. I benefited enormously from the responsibility that was entrusted in me as an analyst, both in terms of producing technical analyses and working directly with senior bankers, but also in terms of direct client exposure literally months after completing training – and the scope and depth of that entrusted responsibility simply grows and grows as you become more senior.”

Dean read Economics and Management at Pembroke College, Oxford and, having interned at Greenhill in summer 2008, completed his degree in 2009.  As an intern, he valued the opportunity to work closely with senior colleagues and particularly enjoyed learning about a large number of different industries and companies thanks to Greenhill’s generalist model – and a decade later remains very much of the same opinion.

Thomas, Associate Class of 2016

"I most enjoy the fast-paced nature of the job and continual challenge. All projects in Investment Banking are different and therefore require a unique and often innovative approach, this requires the junior team to think outside the box and consider the best approach to any task."

Thomas completed a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance and Accounting at the University of Melbourne. He joined Greenhill primarily due to the people and the appeal of working in smaller teams. He was drawn to the ability to work in small teams where he would have client and senior exposure from day 1, which was beneficial for his development. As an Associate, he manages the day-to-day execution of projects and also oversees and assists the Analysts.

Charlie, Vice President, leads Greenhill London’s recruitment efforts

“When speaking to people about potential roles, I often get asked why I chose Greenhill myself. Whilst the chance to work with well-known clients on exciting deals was what attracted me to Greenhill originally, the most important thing for me was that I genuinely enjoyed meeting every single person in my interview process. The opportunity to work on headline-grabbing transactions alongside a group of colleagues that are both fun and inspiring is a rare thing – I really do think Greenhill’s culture is unique in that regard.”

Charlie graduated from the University of Nottingham with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Spanish. Having spent nearly six years at Edmond de Rothschild in London, he joined Greenhill in 2018, keen to take on a new challenge at a firm that would provide an opportunity to advise blue-chip clients on significant transactions, whilst still allowing him to operate as a generalist.

Emily, Analyst, Analyst class of 2019 / Intern class of 2018, leads Greenhill London’s internship programme

“Having been through the recruitment process for a couple of investment banks during my final year at university, it was Greenhill’s personable approach and interest in me as an individual outside of my academic achievements and previous work experience that appealed to me. Greenhill takes a very holistic approach to hiring (they are not using a cookie cutter to fill internship/graduate spaces) and as a result I met a diverse group of individuals throughout the internship program all of whom are smart, supportive and engaging to work with.”

Emily read Economics at the University of Edinburgh, with a year abroad at the University of Pennsylvania. Emily completed her degree in 2018 before joining as an analyst in 2019 following successful conversion of the summer internship.
