The role

An AOCS/GNC (Attitude and Orbital Control System/Guidance, Navigation and Control) graduate engineer is required to join a team of analysts to work on current and future space missions. The job is a stimulating blend of learning and technical work and the successful candidate will gain extensive experience in the design and analysis of space mission GNC, for both small studies and large projects

The department provides the AOCS/GNC engineering and Mission Analysis support to a number of large ESA projects currently being conducted at Airbus DS Ltd. Stevenage and across Europe. These include a number of large ESA projects, including Solar Orbiter (observing the Sun’s heliosphere and solar wind), JUICE (scientific probe to explore the icy moons of Jupiter),  ExoMars Rover (a mission to land and operate an autonomous rover vehicle on Mars) or the Mars Sample Return (NASA-ESA collaboration for bringing samples from the Martian surface back to Earth).

The department also leads a number of technology R&D studies (both internal and external) in the areas of advanced AOCS, GNC/robotics and AI.

Tasks

The successful candidate will be expected to perform AOCS/GNC design and analysis activities through the full engineering lifecycle from initial concept design through to support to validation, producing the associated documentation (design justifications, SW requirements for AOCS/GNC algorithms, performance analysis documentation etc.) and being able to develop SW to a prototype level (non-real time simulator development under C/Matlab).

The successful candidate will have as a minimum a good degree in a numerate discipline and preferably qualifications targeted at the space engineering sector. Knowledge of dynamics, filtering, estimation and/or control is essential, as is experience in the use of Matlab, Simulink. Experience of mathematical modelling, computer simulations and software development is highly desirable. Employment experience within the space industry is preferable, although not mandatory.

This role will be based in Stevenage and will receive the full Airbus Defence & Space Graduate programme benefit package including an annual Salary of £27,000, plus a welcome payment of £2,000.
