    History of service

Barnardo's was the first voluntary organisation to listen and respond to the needs of sexually exploited children across the UK. The London service began in 1996 and has improved outcomes for a very significant number of vulnerable children across the years, working in close multi agency partnership with relevant statutory and voluntary agencies.

We have established a trauma and evidence informed approach to our work which will be both innovative and child centred:

    Objectives of service

TIGER stands for Trauma Informed Growth and Empowered Recovery; Barnardo's unique evidence-informed and evaluated trauma-informed approach. Currently we work with children, young people and their families where there are concerns around child sexual abuse and exploitation, harmful sexual behaviours or Domestic Abuse. The approach is designed to provide children and young people with the narrative to understand and express their experiences and coach them to recovery through empathetic listening, emotional regulation, positive psychology and personal goal-setting. We also work alongside safe primary caregivers to support the child to recovery.

So what does that mean in practice?

    We…

    • Currently work with any child under the age of 18 (25 where there are Disabilities)
    • Provide a space in which they can express and explore their thoughts, feelings and trauma experiences.
    • Coach children and young people to identify their strengths and find the resource within themselves to aid their recovery.
    • Help children and young people to set goals for themselves and to regain some form of control and self-belief.
    • Work with caregivers to help them understand how trauma affects their child
    • Provide caregivers with the skills and tools to support recovery.
    • Work with schools, community, faith groups and commercial establishments to raise awareness of trauma, exploitation and harmful behaviours
    • Provide targeted group work support in schools and with community groups.
