BMW Group Plant Hams Hall is a modern, state-of-the-art engine manufacturing facility, located just outside Birmingham, UK. Producing the latest generation of three and four cylinder petrol engines, and precision machining key engine components, the plant has recently celebrated 20 years of successful production. Operating seven days a week, with more than one engine rolling off the line per minute, the plant plays a key role in BMW Group’s global production network, supplying engines for BMW and MINI, including some of the latest plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Data Scientist

We are offering an interesting and challenging position as a Data Scientist. This is a 13 month placement based at Plant Hams Hall within the Data Science, Innovation & Digitalisation department where you will be an integral asset to our data and digitalisation strategy. Our manufacturing systems produce significant amounts of data and we need data scientists to analyse and explore the potential within this data to support our business opportunities.

What will you be doing?

  • Data mining, applying statistical methods and predictive analytics on big data sets.
  • Working with large data sets on big data platforms.
  • Developing dashboards and analytical tools.
  • Improving production processes and efficiency using data science techniques.
  • Capturing additional data to support existing production system infrastructure.
  • Combining your own skillets to drive efficiency and quality standards

Qualifications

  • Studying towards a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Physics or other quantitative field and on track to achieve a 2:2 or above.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High intrinsic motivation, creativity, project management skills and entrepreneurial thinking.
  • Strong programming language skills in one or more of the following (e.g. Python, Java, C#, C++, R).
  • Experience with Excel and data visualisation tools, preferably PowerBI.
  • Understanding of Oracle / SQL databases.
  • Familiar with data mining, machine learning, statistical signal processing and pattern recognition.
