Application Process

Our Edinburgh spring vacation scheme will take place between 8 - 12th April 2024. All vacation scheme attendees will be offered a training contract interview after their vacation scheme. Successful candidates will be offered a training contract based in our Edinburgh office.

The training contract interview will take place in-person in our Bristol office on Monday 15th April. We will provide flights and accommodation for your trip, and you will also have the opportunity to meet our Bristol based lawyers and trainee solicitors throughout the day and at an evening social.

In order to become a solicitor in Scotland you will need to complete a Scots law degree (LLB) and the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice (PEAT STAGE 1) followed by a two year training contract.

We welcome applicants who are interested in applying for either a 2024 or 2025 training contract. On the application form, there will be an option to select which year you are interested in. Please note, if you wish to apply for a 2024 training contract we will require you to have completed or currently be studying for the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice.

The application for a vacation scheme is a three step process:

  1. Written application form,
  2. Verbal Reasoning test (timed - 20 minutes),
  3. Situational Judgement test (unlimited time).

Please ensure that you complete all 3 steps before the deadline of the 12th January 2024 in order for your application to be considered.

If your application is successful, you will be invited to attend an Assessment centre in our Edinburgh office on either the 5th or 6th March 2024 only.

All of our Assessment centres take place in-person only and due to the configuration of the Assessment centre day, cannot take place remotely. Please be advised, if you are unable to attend on these dates, we will not be able to progress your application. We therefore recommend that you keep these dates free in the event that you are invited to attend an Assessment centre.

Disability Confident Employer

As a Disability Confident Employer we actively encourage people with disabilities, long-term health conditions or impairments to apply for our roles. We regularly implement adjustments to assist people throughout the recruitment process, it's part of what we do.

We encourage you to disclose your disability, long-term health condition or impairment so we can provide great support during your application. We can make bespoke changes to assessments, interviews etc to ensure we provide you with an equal opportunity to shine in our recruitment process.

We have our recruitment processes regularly reviewed by disability specialist organisation WECIL to ensure we are inclusive and following the very best practice.

We will offer a place at one of our Assessment centres to applicants who have a disability and meet our minimum scoring criteria for this role.

Please reach out to Penny Bowring (penny.bowring@burges-salmon.com) if you would like to discuss adjustments that we could make for you throughout the process.

An example of an adjustment that we could make at application stage, is providing you with extra time to complete the Verbal Reasoning test.

Application Eligibility

For example, if you apply to our Bristol based Winter 2023 vacation scheme and your application is unsuccessful, you are not eligible to apply for our Bristol based Spring/Summer 2024 vacation scheme, or the Direct Training Contract 2026.
