We also help industries and governments to navigate the many complex, interrelated transitions taking place globally and regionally, in the energy industry.

About the role

Do you enjoy solving real-life problems and learning from industry leading experts? Do you want to work on a variety of projects that touch all aspects of the energy industry?

Here at DNV, what we do matters. We actively support the Energy industry, be that onshore, offshore, or renewables. However, being based in Aberdeen our main focus is the offshore industry. By helping industry transition to a more decarbonised and sustainable future or helping safeguard life, property and the environment, every day, what you do will make a difference. This is our shared purpose and one our people are proud to be part of.

We provide safety risk and integrity management services to customers in every major energy centre in the world. We achieve this through a variety of industry leading quantitative and qualitative methods, founded on our technical breadth and depth, with collaboration between technical subject matter experts and those with industry knowledge. This can range from complex modelling techniques as well as knowledge of industry good practice, regulations, codes and standards.

As a highly analytical student, studying towards a degree in subjects such as Chemical, Process Safety or Mechanical Engineering, Maths, Physics or Risk & Reliability, our summer placements provide a fantastic opportunity to gain practical work experience to complement your university studies.

Based from our Aberdeen offices in Dyce (with occasional requirement for travel to client sites), you’ll utilise your analytical and problem-solving skills to help our customers across the Energy industry, identify and implement innovative solutions to impact the transition to a more decarbonized and sustainable future.

Supporting with the delivery of our customer projects, you’ll be given real responsibility throughout your time with us, helping develop your skills, knowledge and understanding of the Energy industry, laying the foundations for you to not only develop your career within this fast evolving and dynamic industry, but also make a genuine impact on the future of our planet.

You’ll be stretched, but always supported, surrounded by people who want you to thrive, develop and embrace new challenges. During your time with us, you will be given opportunity to:

  • Learn how major accident hazards (MAH), their likelihood and consequences are managed; understanding the importance of reliability of safeguards; and how to make balanced risk-based arguments for safe operations
  • Apply consequence and risk assessment methods and tools to solve real customer issues using industry leading software and tools, validated through large/full scale experiments performed at our major hazards testing and research facility in Spadeadam. Gas dispersion studies, advanced computational simulations, and quantitative risk assessments are just a taste of the projects that you will work on
  • Engage with clients to understand their challenges as they seek to make the Energy industry safer and more sustainable, with a special focus on energy transition challenges
  • Work alongside our experts and participate in client discussions to develop your understanding of the industry, its terminology, our customer’s challenges and how different engineering disciplines contribute to safety

Our Summer placements are usually 10-12 weeks in duration, typically concluding by early September at the latest, and if you enjoy your time with us, you could be offered the opportunity to join our Graduate Programme at the end of your studies.

Our fantastic summer internships provide the perfect opportunity to develop your Technical Safety knowledge and skills within our industry leading consultancy.
