About the role

Within this role you will take a dynamic part in the teams tasks and activities. There are some large-scale pieces of work in the Regulatory Development team that included overseeing and supporting discrete projects for Storm Overflows including;

  • Analysis of storm overflow data to inform improvements in reporting/development of a metric for the EPA.

Other projects include the Environmental Performance Assessment and updating it for the period of 2026 to 2030. This will involve:

  • Analysing water company data
  • Development of new metric thresholds
  • Undertaking sensitivity and scenario testing.

In this role you will gain experience in areas such as:

  • Building, running, analysing detailed mathematical models
  • Producing evidence for determining new metrics and testing.
  • Informing wider organisation of your results
  • Environmental legislation for our permitting framework
  • Using various techniques to communicate your technical recommendations to a diverse range of customers/stakeholders.

During your traineeship, you will have the opportunity to work on other projects, in other teams including a chance to work with area operational teams to see the work that they do and ways in which we help support it. You will be expected to grow your interest/experience in biodiversity throughout this time with a view to become a member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do, you'll be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment. Full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

The team 

The Water Industry Regulation Team are a multi-functional team that focus on ensuring the effective regulation of the Water Industry sector. The team provides technical support to internal and external customers on a range of water industry related areas including;  

  • The development of our regulation of water quality 
  • The permitting of compliance of water quality 

The team also provides technical input to briefings for our Chief exec, chair officer and briefings for Defra.

Experience/skills required

  • You will be someone with a genuine interest in the environment, with a degree (or equivalent) in the subject and/or a proven track record (paid or voluntary) of working in the sector.
  • A good numerical background and understanding 
  • Proven data analysis skills  

To be eligible for this role you will need to meet ALL the following criteria:

Criteria 1

  • You are a UK, Commonwealth or EEA (European Economic Area) national
  • You have the right to work in the UK

Criteria 2

  • Must have a minimum of a honours degree in environmental science or equivalent subject
  • Driving licence .
