G-Research is Europe’s leading quantitative finance research firm. We hire the brightest minds in the world to tackle some of the biggest questions in finance. We pair this expertise with machine learning, big data, and some of the most advanced technology available to predict movements in financial markets.

    The role

    • 6-month internship: 3rd April - September 22nd 2023
    • 3-month internship: 3rd July - September 22nd 2023
    • 09:00-17:30 working hours
    • Based in Central London

We are currently seeking the brightest students to join us for the summer (2023) between their penultimate and final years of study. We offer internships lasting either 3 or 6 months, finishing in September.

Joining G-Research as an Engineering Intern will enable you to develop knowledge of working with successful legacy systems as they are modernised; a highly sought-after skill.

If you're an innovator, intellectually curious, and want to experience world-class engineering, then you'll find friends and a home with us. You will be performing a challenging and satisfying role as part of an existing team, including delivering improvements to our production platforms.

Our Engineering Internship sits within the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), which is responsible for the future technology direction for the business. The Office comprises three groups:

    • The Architecture Practice works with a range of business and technical stakeholders to agree the technical roadmap and ensure requirements are articulated clearly
    • The Technology Innovation Group is a fast-paced, interdisciplinary team supporting our Researchers and Engineers in taking advantage of next generation hardware and software across the full stack
    • G-Research Open-Source Software works with the open-source community to get involved in future roadmaps, influence engineering directions and make contributions to open-source machine learning frameworks and libraries

We are transforming our platforms from a suite of mostly in-house enterprise solutions to cloud-style distributed systems that leverage the best of open-source and third-party offerings.

As an Engineering Intern, you will join us at the centre of this exciting change, and have the opportunity to work with technologies such as Spark, Kafka, Cassandra, .NET Core, Docker, Kubernetes, and more as we make this transition.

As we evolve our technology we are also evolving the way we work. Innovation happens at the blurry edge of disciplines, so we work cross-functionally to generate new ideas and business opportunities.

Depending on which group you join within the Office of the CTO...

    Your key responsibilities may include

    • Analysing current and future needs from the Research and Trading stack and finding ways to unlock additional value
    • Building proof-of-concept implementations that validate new products and services, or demonstrate new approaches and methods
    • Gathering, analysing, documenting, and validating the needs of customers and stakeholders
    • Identifying use cases and matching them to different hardware accelerators
    • Creating working examples of machine learning models to run on alternative hardware accelerators
    • Adapting existing models to evaluate different hardware accelerator architectures
    • Helping to identify gaps in new vendor technologies and tool chains
    • Contributing code to open-source initiatives in the machine learning ecosystem
    • Working with the open-source community to understand and contribute to the roadmap for machine learning frameworks and libraries
    • Working with engineers in G-Research on how existing and future open-source features could be used
    • Working with G-Research on how open-source initiatives can be further extended to better support our use cases or better exploit architectural differences in new hardware accelerators

    Who are we looking for?

Successful candidates will be strong, competent and practical software engineers. They should be enthusiastic and have a genuine interest in both software technology and the underlying hardware.

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

    • Excellent academics - candidates should be studying towards a 2:1 or above in Computer Science or Computer Science with Mathematics from a top tier university. You should also have exceptional pre- university academics
    • Experience with an object oriented programming language, preferably C#, Java or C++
    • Appreciation of good software architecture, core programming techniques and data structures
    • Excellent technical communication and problem-solving skills.
    • We have a strong preference for candidates who have undertaken at least one development internship elsewhere
    • Financial experience is useful, but is not required

    Induction and training

Successful candidates will join G-Research on our Internship programme, giving them an in-depth introduction to the world of technology within finance, as well as extensive introductions to the internal workings of the business.

You will be paired with an experienced team member who will mentor you through your time with us. In addition, there are various training courses you can opt-in to really maximise your time with us. This includes online learning licences to hone your technical skills and soft skill training to ensure you can get the best out of yourself.

    Interview process

The first stage of the process is to get involved with our Weather Prediction challenge*! You will have a maximum of 2.5 hours to complete the challenge.

Successful candidates will then be invited to take part in an assessment centre followed by mentor interviews. The assessment centre will look to explore your technical and behavioural competencies.

Planned dates for the assessment centre are: October 5th, October 24th, November 15th, November 23rd and December 7th.

*By competing in this challenge you are also eligible to win prizes, if you are among the top performers when the challenge closes in January!

Please note, because we offer graduate roles to strong performers from our intern cohort, we are only able to consider applications from those graduating in 2024. Interviews will commence in October.
