We’re looking for an exceptional Marine Forecasting - Industrial Placement 2024 to help us make a difference to our planet.

As our Marine Forecasting - Industrial Placement 2024 you will work a hybrid pattern and will be on site at Exeter HQ. We expect all placements to work in a hybrid fashion and suggest one day a week but at a minimum, once a month. You can choose to work more frequently in our state-of-the-art office if you'd prefer.

Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week. Our people are at the heart of what we do and we'll do our best to agree a working pattern that works for everyone.

Job Purpose

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Met Office on a 12-month Year In Industry placement, developing your skills and knowledge and ensuring you gain the most value possible from your experience with us. You will have the opportunity to network with our cohort of Industrial Placement all over the Met Office and understand what career opportunities we can offer you after you graduate.

As our Marine Forecasting - Industrial Placement 2024, you will help to develop and evaluate the feasibility of automated processes for forecasting marine weather hazards. You will explore data-to-text algorithms and their effectiveness and benefits in auto generating sea-state components of the Shipping Forecast and Inshore Waters Forecast, both widely used nationally and internationally in routine operations. The text products will be created ingesting probability information derived from Met Office high resolution and ensemble wave and weather model data, and verified against existing forecaster generated products in order to assess their value and potential efficiencies for the forecast production process. Working alongside marine modelling and verification scientists your key duties will be to:

  • Learn and understand how the Met Office creates and verifies probabilistic forecasts of wind and sea-state using ensemble forecast models
  • Generate documented computer code to derive text based, sea-state and marine safety information from ensemble forecasts
  • Design and run experiments to compare the quality of automated text forecasts with forecasts generated by Met Office expert meteorologists
  • Develop a web interface to demonstrate the new forecasts
  • Document and report your work as both written articles and Met Office internal seminars

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

  1. Be an "expert by nature" with good mathematical and code development skills (e.g. in python, Matlab, Javascript)
  2. Have an innovative approach to problem solving with an interest in how data science can help the Met Office to "keep evolving" its environmental forecasting and hazard warning services
  3. Be able to embrace our culture of "better together" through good team working and communication skills
