Mott MacDonald are offering an opportunity for one student to join the Special Services Division (SSD) for their year in industry. SSD is a growing area of the business within the transportation sector of the company and the team is at the forefront of developing advanced structural analyses and dynamic solutions, addressing material technology requirements, advancing asset life management of a wide range of infrastructure, and undertaking specialist studies for a diversity of clients. We work on a range of projects in the UK and abroad, of varying size. Should the candidate wish, then there is likely to also be an opportunity to go to site.

As a placement student in SSD, you would be working on a wide range of projects supported by the team, which cover aspects such as design, forensic analysis, first-principles problem solving and asset life extension. You would be working in a skilled team of engineers, applying a range of design codes, as well as assessing non-code compliant structures, often using FEA software, to develop innovative solutions for our clients. Mentors within the team will be assigned to help with technical and non-technical questions. We have a strong focus, within our projects, on sustainability, applying this to the solutions we develop for designs both environmentally and socially, as well as developing tools to aid with these processes.

Candidate specification

We are currently recruiting for committed and motivated students with a genuine passion for problem solving, complex analysis and a desire to make a difference in the world. The SSD team has a focus on specialist skills such as dynamics, vibration and non-linear problems, so a keen interest in these areas and willingness to learn is required.

To be eligible for this opportunity, you will have less than 12 months relevant experience and be studying a degree in one of the following degree disciplines:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Civil and Structural Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • General Engineering (with a specialism in one of the above)

In your application you should be able to demonstrate your interest in the role and working at Mott MacDonald through relevant experience, such as studying relevant modules, or previous work experience.

We are looking for applicants with the following characteristics:

  • Methodical approach to problem solving
  • Ability to use your initiative to undertake tasks efficiently and independently and a willingness to learn.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, which allow you to confidently liaise with clients and team members.
  • Excellent written communication and attention to detail and be able to demonstrate accurate technical drawings and good report writing.

As we want the best people for the role, we support flexible working. Please ask us at interview stage about any flexibility you may need.
